Liam Trotter says the senior players at Wanderers have to help the younger members of the squad in what are tough times to be handed a first-team chance.

Five of the starting XI at Brentford on Tuesday were aged 21 or under as interim boss Jimmy Phillips looks to the future with relegation to League One expected to be confirmed tomorrow at Derby County.

Trotter says the introduction of youngsters may have had an effect on recent results but says it is up to the more experienced professionals like himself to support them, particularly after a run of lacklustre displays by the team since Phillips took charge.

The midfielder said: "I can’t explain why things have gone downhill even more in the last three games under Jimmy.

"I think it is too hard to pinpoint one thing as to why it has gone wrong.

"Obviously there have been changes in the team with young players coming in.

"It is not their fault but naturally they are learning the game.

"They deserve their chance because the senior players haven’t been good enough.

"The young lads coming through have got talent but it is going to be difficult for them to play in games like Tuesday.

"As senior lads, we have to do better and help them as much as we can.

"We have to play our part and do our best to help the younger players."

Whoever is selected to face the Rams tomorrow, Trotter admits the team has to do better than they did in the first half of their 3-1 defeat at Brentford on Tuesday.

He added: "We threw it away in the first half and it wasn’t good enough.

"We didn’t compete well enough and their goals came far too easily.

"It left us with an impossible task.

"At half time, Jimmy had his say and Reidy had his.

"They told us what needed to be better, where we were going wrong and adjusted some things.

"They gave us the rollicking we needed and it helped because we were better in the second half.

"We improved a bit in the second half but it was too little too late."
