Liam O’Neil’s first half strike was enough to condemn Wanderers to a narrow defeat at the Proact Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Bolton did rally in an attempt to pull themselves back into the clash with Zach Clough coming close on numerous occasions, but their efforts ultimately proved fruitless at the final whistle.

And speaking following the game, manager Phil Parkinson covered the following points…

On the game itself…
I think we had enough chances to win the game. We didn’t play at our best though, I’ll be honest about that.

Right from the start, we had our opportunities but we just couldn’t find that moment today to unlock the door to get us up and running.

Chesterfield scored with their first opportunity of the afternoon though and they were able to hold onto that lead.

The game was very bitty in the second half and Chesterfield interrupted the flow of it as you’d expect. Although we had a couple of opportunities in the second period, we just weren’t able to get that all important goal.

On the positives his side can take from the encounter…
This is the life of a football club ultimately – you have to experience defeats along the way.

Now though, we have to dust ourselves down and get ready for the Christmas period.

We will learn our lessons from today, but equally we cannot be too disappointed given the run that we’ve been on of late. We’ve had a fantastic run of results and we need to be ready to mount another one.

On the superb travelling support…
The fans were absolutely fantastic for us today and we’re disappointed that we haven’t got anything from the game for them.

You have got to take your chances though. There were a couple of chances where he had some gilt-edged opportunities, but we move on and we’ll be ready for Shrewsbury on Boxing Day.

And finally, on having two home games next up over the festive period…
They will be two great games of football, but every game in this division is a test.

I know how hard teams like Chesterfield and Shrewsbury will be working with them down at the bottom of the table, fighting for their lives.

You could sense that Chesterfield were doing just that today.

We just have to be ready though and treat every game as though it’s a top of the table clash.
