Does anyone know when The Buff ceased printing. Used to get a copy on the way out of Burnden and devour a report on the first half.
Dad wouldn't buy it,preferring The Football Pink.

1988 - I can't be more exact than that. (I guess it probably must have been at the last home match of that season?).

The info is from this link -

Didn't it change towards the end?

I seem to recall that they stopped printing it from the old ice cream van thingy at the corner of Burnden/Manchester Road, a few seasons before and instead printed it centrally and sold it throughout the week - or something like that - but yes the lay out I/we remember used to contain results and match reports on the front page.

Just shows you how technology has taken over. All you need now is a mobile phone.

I spend more time looking back these days.

I was looking through some old programmes again this week, and some of the adverts bring back many happy memories.

There's one for Brian Pilling on Blackburn Road. We got our TV's from there.

Didn't they wind up just printing it on normal paper and incorporating it into Monday's edition of the BEN?

I used to love the Buff because as well as football they used to publish all the darts league tables for the Bolton and Farnworth leagues.
Wasn't the Pink the Manchester version?

That's right. The Pink had a small Wanderers section, but it wasn't much. Was a good read though.

I remember the main reporter for the Pink was David Meek.

how did they manage to get it printed so quickly and with all the results? Always wondered as they didn't have any of the technology we have these days

If I recall correctly they didn't!

I seem to remember that they only printed the latest scores they had but they had a column down the right of the front page (the stop press column) in which they printed the final scores as they came in over the radio.

But even that was cutting edge technology back in the day and we all queued up to buy the paper - or in most cases pester the life out of someone who had by asking them the scores of various matches as you walked down the Manny Road.

If we were playing away and you found yourself shopping in town on that day you would often see a crowd of blokes stood outside the television shops watching the results on the TV.

Happy days.

A bit like the hi-tech way they used to convey the half-time scores at Burnden involving a convoluted system of letters being ascribed to games in the programme and then someone putting scores up against the letters behind the goal on a glorified cricket scoreboard.

It was the height of sophistication in its day.

I used to do a paper round on Saturday's when you finished the Evening News round then you had to start again and do the Buff round. I used to get my Grandma to do the Saturday stint so i could go to the match.

Very Happy

I also used to hate my Saturday afternoon round for that very reason.

As a kid I hated it when we won because it meant that more people took The Buff.

And that meant more leg-work for me.

I think I got about 3p a paper back in 1983.

And for the kids reading this, that works out at about 3p a paper in new money.

Yeah.....

Wasn't that the year we got hammered nearly every game and ended up getting relegated to the 3rd division along with Rovers?
Plus Hendrix and Janis Joplin pegged it.

Anything but happy days.
