Wanderers are trying to talk ex-Blackburn Rovers midfielder Jason Lowe into signing at the Macron Stadium.

Nottingham Forest have also shown an interest in the 25-year-old, who has been touted as a replacement for Jay Spearing.

It is understood Lowe has held preliminary talks and is one of three players who could yet be signed up before the start of the Championship season – but that reports of a £500,000-a-year salary offer are wide of the mark.

The ex-Ewood Park skipper can play at centre-half, right-back or as a defensive midfielder, so would offer Phil Parkinson options in a squad which is still shackled by a transfer embargo.

But for a brief loan spell at Oldham, Wigan-born Lowe has spent his entire professional career with Rovers but parted company in the summer after they were relegated to League One.

Forest are also keen on his signature but club sources suggest he is keen to stay in the North West, if possible, and hopes to make a decision on his future by the end of this week.

Wanderers play their penultimate pre-season fixture at Stockport County tonight looking to rest a number of the players who featured on Saturday at Fleetwood.

Parkinson has confirmed he will take another look at trialist Alex Bruce and will also give extra game time to the likes of Adam Armstrong, Adam Le Fondre, Darren Pratley, Chris Taylor and Derik Osede.

“It was important we got minutes into the senior players,” the manager said. “Alex (Bruce) will play some minutes in the Stockport game and the lads who played the full 90 against Fleetwood won’t start again, so it’ll be a Bolton XI going.

“It gives us a chance to work on a few things and have a look at some of the younger lads, who have worked hard for us in the pre-season so far.”

Meanwhile, reports in the Italian press suggest Wanderers will offer a trial to ex-Real Zaragoza and Juventus forward Hector Otin.

Birmingham City have signed free-agent midfielder Jason Lowe on a one-year deal, following his exit from Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season.
The 25-year-old had been on trial with Premier League side West Bromwich Albion but was not offered a deal.
Lowe, who captained Rovers, played 196 games, scoring once, after progressing through the academy but left after relegation.

He is manager Harry Redknapp's 11th summer signing.
