What Parkinson Thought - Wigan

Bolton Wanderers were held to a draw against Wigan Athletic at the University of Bolton Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Will Buckley's superb finish gave Phil Parkinson's side an early lead.

However, a contentious Will Grigg penalty brought The Latics level in the first half.

When speaking to bwfc.co.uk after the game, manager Phil Parkinson covered the following topics…

His assessment of the game…

“At the start of the game, up to Wigan's goal, I thought we played really well. Their penalty was a contentious decision to say the very least.''

''That kind of knocked us a little bit. I felt for that period after the penalty we just dipped and went a bit negative and went backwards with the ball.''

''We dug deep again and got the point. We would have loved it to have been all three and we were very unlucky not to get a penalty ourselves.''

''The supporters will think we've said that for the last three weeks, but if you look at the incident the player has got his arm in unnatrual position and blocked the cross-shot; I thought the rule was that if your arms were in that position, then it was a penalty.''

''But the lads have rolled their sleeves up and given absolutely everything. If we keep working hard for each other and keep plugging away, things will turn for us in terms of turning points into three.''

On the positives from the performance and result...

“In the last three games, we've been quite pleased how we've played. Against Sheffield Wednesday we felt we should have got a point and today, we take the point.''

''We've been a bit unlucky not to turn the draws into all three points. The lads need to keep working hard for each other and believe, whilst showing the moments of quality that we did for the goal today.''

''I felt we looked more threatening than we have for a while at home, with Sammy (Ameobi) in behind Doidgey and the two wide players causing problems.''

On a game that could have gone either way…

''I felt that Wigan looked dangerous on the break; a couple of times we had set-plays and then (Josh) Windass took them forward on the counter-attack.''

''You've always got to be careful you don't leave the back door open, get hit on the break and end up losing the game. I thought there was a period where they did well on the break.''

''The subs came on and tried to give us a lift, but unfortunately we couldn't find that moment to win us the game.''

On a Bolton penalty appeal turned down…

“The referee must know that the penalty was a contentious one, and then when you see one which is probably 60-40 for us, you think that might have swung the balance and given us a penalty.''

''It wasn't to be, but we've got to keep going and like I said we've had a tough week, but the lads have shown great resilience.''

'They're a good group of lads with a lot of honesty, and I thought the crowd was terrific in getting behind the team, but they saw a team that were wearing the shirt with pride.''

''Of course, they want more, I want more and so do the players, but they'll be driving away tonight knowing they've seen a very honest performance from a Bolton Wanderers team.''

On preparing for Norwich away…

“We went there last season and got a draw. It's a tough place to go, but anyone can beat anyone in this league.''

''They've got some decent players, we know that, and they've had a good win today. It'd been proven many times that teams can beat anyone in the Championship, and we've got to be one of those sides next weekend.''

He felt we were more threatening.
I didn’t.

More threatening compared to previous home games* which is true - but a low bar to set.

Thought Noone and Buckley had better games than I’ve seen them have a while (again low bar).

The issue remains in central midfield, Williams needs to be upgraded for a better box to box midfielder. Lowe also needs to be told to put his foot on the ball, I’m all for clearing the ball but (as against millwall) we end up struggling to get out because we keep hitting the ball straight back to them.

Martins free to block me if he wants, he lies about the reasons though. I never insulted him, all I did was ask him to justify his hatred for Parky which he was unable to.

He seems to enjoy his indirect digs through other posters though, which is just about the most tragic thing I’ve ever seen on here. But I’m happy to let him keep hiding away if it helps him.

I think while predictable Parkinson's comments were in fact largely accurate. I still feel he should go and that he's simply not positive enough in how the team's set up but that's by the by here. The problem for both managers and the media is that they need to say something to fill their column inches or put on their websites but they can't actually go too far afield in terms of what they say for fear of getting into trouble with the League or someone with a wafer thin skin.

For instance having seen the "penalty" my own comment would have been "Did the referee actually qualify or was his outfit a Christmas present from his mum? His awesome ineptitude in giving that was only matched by his amazing incompetence in turning down a stonewall penalty for us and I think he's not fit to referee a game of Subbuteo much less Championship football."

I'm certain every media organisation in the country would publish that but equally certain the League  would not be impressed even though it's true.

That said, saying something different doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be about the referees performance e.g. there’s plenty to be said about improving quality in midfield,  better delivery, movement and passing, chance creation, athleticism etc all of which can be done without upsetting anyone or giving any secrets away. A bit of honest analysis and less use of cliches from the manager would be very welcome.

Unfortunately the FA are not the only people Phil or any other manager has to avoid offending or upsetting. The sponsors are one such group plus of course the "keyboard warriors" who seem to have appointed themselves the arbiters of all that is and isn't acceptable. Get so much as a word out of place and you'll be labelled a homophobic mysoginist bigot faster than I can type it.

Add in that many managers and players are now given specialist "training" in how to talk to the media without actually saying anything and it's little wonder they tend to repeat themselves a lot.

I agree an honest analysis would be better and frankly more interesting but unvarnished comments are now as rare as an honest politician I'm afraid.
