I was reading the funny papers and saw Camila Long complaining that there isnt much work at the moment for a film critic, and that Gov.UK suggests she retrains as a Drone Pilot.
The thing is, this retraining applies to all. She most likely will be the same as most middle class earners that have enjoyed a great Salary for many years. The working class face this sort of thing as part of normal life.
People should live by their means. Set your stall up. You dont go borrowing huge amounts of money to get a better house than you can afford.
Buy a cheap first-time house and pay it off. Then save up to buy another. The same with a Car.
She seems to be veiling that they are above being told to retrain as they are special. How dare they suggest something lowly such as a Drone Pilot!
She is still earning a Salary at the Times I assume.

I can imagine her going on a working class holiday to Blackpool and asking Plebeians where the local Farmers` market is.
If she found a farm she would be asking the Farmer if the Cows all had names.
She would be perusing the fairground looking for Hummus and taking her family along the Blackpool beach looking for some Cliffs to have a Picnic.

The thing is that the credit crunch came about primarily because of people on low incomes borrowing far too much in order to fill their lives with luxury items and houses they can't afford. There's a housing estate in the next town with drives full of Range Rovers and beamers and I'd bet everyone of them is on the never never.
Higher income folk are far less likely to borrow so much. I've never borrowed anything or bought anything on credit as my folks brought me up to do bowt until I can pay for it. And I've never felt the need to show off to the neighbours. Correction - I did have a mortgage once but paid it off in a couple of years, worked on the house and bought the next one out of the profit.

Exactly, Id imagine a good 90 percent of people with Range Rovers etc will be on credit for them.
If people who earned a lot of money saved it, they wouldnt have to worry about retraining to get another job as they would be secure enough to have a few years off.
I know a financial advisor and he told me that people who earn more money, borrow more money, and have far bigger debts than the other lot on low incomes whom are in debt.
Yes, they do it to impress the neighbours etc. People borrow money they cant afford to buy things they dont need to impress people who they dont like.
It is all down to desire. Desire is the cause of the suffering.

Historically the more money you had, the more money you were able to borrow as lenders could get security against assets however if lenders reduce lending criteria i.e. increase their risk by making loans easy they are effectively betting on the economy to continue to grow, do well and perhaps even improve. Forever.

History tells us that ain't likely.

Bottom line is that increasingly societal expectations haven't been managed in the way that reality taught my generation - and all against a background of rampant commercialism to whip up the desire.

No disrespect you two, but I think you need to drag yourselves out of the dark ages. Your views on finances seem completely awry, and as for people spending money to impress others, really?
The days of keeping up with the Jones's are over, and people borrow money to survive as much as anything, and in paying smaller amounts they reduce the pain to manageable proportions. The world runs on credit, and has done, in one form or another, since time immemorial. To save up first and then buy, means that you have a certain amount of security in both your own standing and the lack of change in your financial commitments. This most definitely isn't the case nowadays.

'people borrow money to survive?' That must be why Dale Vince, who's not interested in money btw, borrows a million quid a year from Egotricity, I suppose.

And Egotricity borrows money so that it can 'lend' it to Dale Vince and borrows even more money to spend on Forest Green Rovers.

Has nobody round Gloucestershire way figured this out yet?

If I'm honest Bob, I'm not the slightest interested in Dale Vince, his financial machinations, or his lifestyle.
As for the people in Gloucestershire, apart from the FG supporters I would be very surprised if that many would seem to be as obsessed as you are. In fact, I think its only once or twice I have seen him on the local TV news in the past year or more, and then its usually about his team.

So nobody'd figured it out yet, or hardly anybody like Giffo from Stroud:

'Unfortunately I live in the same town as the douchebag and therefore sadly I bump into the little weasel from time to time.'

Or Jim Makepeace in the Stroud News and Journal (SNJ):

I agree with GJP and A.Hill but isn't it funny that SNJ is hiding behind a "Letter of the day" to print this story? Dale Vince can't claim the editor is victimizing him. It's an unknown independent contributor!
Nice one. And yes- thank you SNJ for starting to get real about people like Dale Vince even though you did it in a round-about way. Pity you didn't do it with David Drew.

"People keeping up with the Joneses" is alive and kicking Glos. From kids that insist they "have to have" a smart phone to parents who "have to have" a fashionable house/clothes/car/kitchen/ etc beyond their means.
It's true that some people are forced to borrow to survive but in terms of the overall credit taken in the UK they are a significant minority - most borrow for lifestyle reasons.

That's not keeping up with the Jones's, its a combination of stupidity and greed, but I see where you are coming from.

People do not need to have top of the range cars or extensions or bigger houses or Holidays or huge weddings. They can quite easily have a cheap reliable vehicle and not be in debt, and have no mortgage, unless first time buyers. It isnt a case of keeping up with the Jones`, it is trying to outdo the Jones`. It is arrogance, amongst other reasons.
The one point I was making with the article  is that if this Lady had set her stall up and lived by her means then she would have no mortgage, no credit debt and would be secure not to work for a while. I am not pointing at her particularly but at a lot of people in the World these days.

It has occurred to myself since the last post that , as an amateur social anthropologist Razz, and my observations of people in society, that by far the worst `type` of people nowadays and for the last 20 years at arrogance and showing off is the working class. The working class are terrible for having to have a more expensive vehicle than their neighbours. The same with all the other ones, Holidays, Extensions and what have you.
I only keep posting about the middle class as they are interesting. I dont dislike the middle class. I dont dislike the working class. I find it entertaining.

7,468posts on Nuts and gloswhite thinks that I'm the one that's obsessed. You couldn't make it up.
I reckon that its the duty of anyone vaguely normal to call out the charlatan's, shithouses and shysters. Its what most Bolton folk always used to do. Well that's the way I remember it any road.

I don't believe posting 7468 posts in 12 years can be classed as obsessive, especially on a forum, (which is what its for), however 817 in a much shorter time, and nearly all on the same topic possibly could be.
