Or could it be that in the current climate, he feared that he wouldn't get a fair hearing and would automatically be seen as a "disgusting pervert" by sections of the public who, despite not even knowing what the allegations were exactly, let alone whether he was guilty, would automatically assume that he was?

Trial by hearsay, rumour and guesswork is dangerous.

It isn't a police investigation yet. In fact it was being led by Carwyn Jones whose party members had spoken to the women offended against. There was no further comment and despite the mantra "There's no smoke without fire," I'd like to add, "Innocent until proven guilty."
