Wanderers finished a difficult week with a derby draw against Wigan Athletic.

Will Buckley’s seventh-minute goal was cancelled out by a controversial Will Grigg spot-kick and Phil Parkinson was left fuming when Mark Beevers’ penalty appeal was turned down late in the game.

But how did the players fare? Marc Iles gives his view.

WANDERERS (4-2-3-1)

BEN ALNWICK…6 Really didn’t have a busy afternoon, with a routine stop from Josh Windass the only save to make in the game.

PAWEL OLKOWSKI…6.5 Looked positive on the ball and provided a good cross to find Buckley for the opening goal. A couple of show-stopping challenges to keep the crowd entertained, too.

JACK HOBBS…6 Desperately unlucky with the penalty, even if some question whether he needed to go to ground. Managed to win a lot in the air.

MARK BEEVERS…6 Yet more tidy defending and starting to show a bit of belief in the opposition box, too. His volley for the late penalty appeal was ample evidence.

ANDY TAYLOR…6.5 Looked to have the bit between his teeth from the first whistle against his former club. Always looked positive on the ball.

JASON LOWE…6.5 Returning to a more condensed 4-2-3-1, Lowe looks comfortable. Doesn’t make many mistakes on the ball, got about midfield well and was willing to put his foot in.

JOE WILLIAMS…6.5 You worried when he picked up a yellow card inside the first couple of minutes but the youngster’s needle was what was needed in midfield.

CRAIG NOONE…6.5 Phil Parkinson must wish he could bottle Noone’s tenacity at times. Metronomic charging up and down the wing to help out at both ends.

SAMMY AMEOBI…6 Looked in the mood for the opening 25 minutes but still feeling his way back to full fitness and looked tired when moved out to the wing in the second half.

WILL BUCKLEY…6 Took his goal extremely well but should have played Dodige in for a second when he broke through on to Ameobi’s first-half pass. Picked up a thigh problem for his efforts, too.

CHRISTIAN DOIDGE…7 Handed a start and rewarded Parkinson with a gutsy display. A superb clearance off the line and plenty of hard running - but not the clear-cut chance to score that he would have liked.

Subs: Magennis 5, 68 (for Buckley) - Mistaken for Yanic Wildschut by the Wigan fans... But didn't get a chance to have the last laugh.

Wildschut 77 (for Ameobi) - Largely anonymous, which was quite ironic.

Not used: Matthews, Vela, Oztumer, Wilson, Wheater

Wigan (4-4-1-1): Walton; Naismith, Burn, Cipre, James; Roberts, Morsy, Evans, Byrne; Windass; Grigg

Subs: McManaman 69 (for Roberts), Vaughan 69 (for Grigg), Garner 90+2 (for Grigg)

Not used:
Jones, Gibson, Lopes, Connolly

Referee: Simon Hopper (Wiltshire) 3/10 - Got the first penalty call wrong, and anyone of a Wanderers persuasion would argue the second one, too. Made you yearn for a Millwall fan to be plucked out of the stands.

Attendance: 15,237 (2,092)
