bolton - Pundits hail Collins goal as Bolton reach Wembley 18055035

The pundits hailed Aaron Collins’ moment of magic as Wanderers overcame Barnsley to reach the play-off final at Wembley.

The visitors got the first goal on the night but Collins equalised with a superb strike from just outside the penalty area.

It was the Welshman’s ninth goal since his move from Bristol Rovers in January and he seems to be getting stronger and stronger.

Former Wycombe defender Joe Jacobson told Sky Sports: “It was a great finish. Another set-piece, but not the first phase this time.

“Aaron Collins kind of holds out in a position outside the area, where he loves to be. He loves to get the ball and have a strike at goal.

“Corey O’Keeffe is a bit unsure whether to go and press him and in the end, no-one from Barnsley really commits to getting tight to him.

“Everyone kind of stands off him and allows him to shoot. He gives the keeper the eyes a little bit and it is a fantastic strike.

“The technique is brilliant – to reverse the ball like that and get so much power from his instep. Take nothing away from Collins.”

Ex-Reading man Jobi McAnuff was also in the studio and has been impressed by the job Ian Evatt has done at Bolton over the past four years.

“Another manager who has a clear way of playing,” he added. “I played against his teams at Barrow and he came into Bolton.

“The team that went up (from League Two), I actually played against them and it was one of the reasons I retired. I got an absolute run around!

“They were brilliant – open, expansive, attacking, exactly what the fans want to see. Then it is a question of can you continue that on.

“They had a year to stabilise in League One and last year, just falling short. But again, you can see progress.

“He has been given time to build and added quality to the group, Aaron Collins in particular. Especially in those forward areas, he has been a great addition.

“He has got the framework in place and I think this really is an opportunity to go and get themselves that promotion they have threatened over the past couple of years.”
