John Sheridan has batted away links with the Wanderers job, insisting he only has eyes for Oldham Athletic.

The former Whites midfielder has been strongly linked with the vacant job at the Macron this week but speaking ahead of the Latics’ game at Millwall in League One today, Sheridan played down the stories.

“That’s all they are, rumours,” he told the Oldham Chronicle. “You lads probably know more than I know.

“I am just getting on with the job and haven’t heard anything. I just want to concentrate on thinking about what I want to bring in for next season, player-wise, and on winning at Millwall and then against Coventry.”

Sheridan’s is one of a number of names known to interest co-owner Ken Anderson and with ex-Republic of Ireland team-mate Andy Townsend also acting as a sounding board during the managerial hunt, the well-respected 51-year-old appears to be a strong candidate.

Oldham have already issued a statement to say they would not welcome an approach for their manager, who signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Boundary Park in January and led them away from the relegation zone.

But after Southend United’s Phil Brown and Northampton Town’s Chris Wilder publicly ruled themselves out in the last few weeks and deadlines revealed by Anderson to name a new boss have come and gone, the situation at the Macron is being viewed with increasing concern by the club’s supporters.

Jimmy Phillips and Peter Reid will take charge of this lunchtime’s home game against Hull City and Phillips confirmed on Thursday he also expected to lead the team against Fulham next weekend.

“It looks very much like an appointment will wait until after the Fulham game,” he added.
