What a totally disastrous afternoon at Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

We went into the away end at about 2.30pm among the 3,500-plus away fans who were, as usual, in good voice and baiting the opposition fans.

Things started to go downhill rapidly after four minutes with a simple, unchallenged header from a corner to make it 1-0.

The rest of the half was pretty toothless.

We conceded again after seven minutes of the second half, then Remi Matthews got mugged before we could shout "he's behind you".

Things started to turn nasty as the players and Phil Parkinson were given dog's abuse by the alcohol-fuelled section, who then did not take kindly to one of their own being ejected, and started jostling with the police.

The fact we got a goal back was soon forgotten as Wigan crashed home their fourth.

The scenes that followed were the most disgraceful I have ever witnessed as a Bolton fan, as our lot started whizzing full bottles of beer into the home end to our left.

They may not have been glass, but if you were hit by a liquid-filled plastic missile from 50 metres, you would certainly know about it, as a couple of their stewards found out.

Leaving early is something I have never done, but for the first time ever I did, as after 75 minutes, I had had enough of pathetic football combined with the disgraceful behaviour of a large section of our so-called fans.

So I made my way down to the concourse to make my escape from the mayhem.

The mess down there was disgusting. I stepped over a floor absolutely covered with hundreds of beer bottles, and toilets covered in pools of vomit.

I will be seriously considering the merits of further away trips, particularly to derby games.

Let's hope Ken Anderson gets this sale sorted then we can hopefully move on to a brighter future, albeit starting in League One.

On the darker side, as seen recently with the unhealthy increase in pitch invaders, and judging from what I saw on Saturday, football authorities and clubs need to get their acts together, otherwise we risk a return to 1970s-type hooliganism.
