There was plenty to discuss in our pre-match rituals as we headed for the UniBol for our match against Portsmouth, a club seemingly on the way to recovery after their traumatic financial past.

It was representatives of the Portsmouth Supporters' Trust who came up to Bolton, describing the harrowing details of their fall from grace and recommending that we set up a Supporters' Trust to protect the future of our club.

Talking to their supporters earlier this season down at Fratton Park, they said that they felt together as one club now but the reality was they had had to sell a couple of players for financial reasons and that was the cause of their slow start to this season.

We’re still at the very early stages of our recovery and the latest piece of the jigsaw arrived on Friday in the form of left back Brandon Fleming on loan from Hull City.

There was a welcome back for Jason Lowe but Keith Hill was without strikers Daryl Murphy and Muhammadu Faal.

The contrast in current form could hardly be more distinct with Pompey arriving on the back of three consecutive wins to our three consecutive defeats.

However, form counted for nothing once we kicked off and we gave as good as we got.

We didn’t deserve to lose as we lost out to a poorly defended free-kick, dubiously awarded for an innocuous looking tackle. But as Sir Alex Ferguson used to say, ‘don’t give them the chance to dive’. Also, if we can’t score, then we are not going to get anything from a match.

No-one could be faulted for effort, especially the impressive Fleming but this lack of quality up front is costing us dearly.

It was interesting to hear that Peter Kenyon is helping the board behind the scenes.

His undeniable experience and expertise at the highest level of football should prove invaluable in guiding the rebuilding of our club.

I’m looking forward to seeing what influence he has at the UniBol and to what he can bring to the club in terms of laying the foundations for a successful future. As far as I’m concerned, our journey has only just begun and the fight goes on together.
