Action Fraud warning after coronavirus scams cost victims over £800k

Action Fraud have released a warning after scams involving coronavirus have cost victims over £800,000.

Since February, the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) identified 21 reports of fraud where the COVID-19 virus was mentioned.

Ten of these reports were made by victims who had tried to buy face masks from fraudulent sellers.

One victim reported losing over £15,000 when they bought some of the protective items that were never delivered.

Multiple reports about coronavirus-related phishing emails trying to trick people into opening malicious attachments or giving out personal or financial information have also been received.

A common tactic seen involves fraudsters pretending to be from research organisations affiliated with the World Health Organisation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

They claim they can provide a list of people infected with COVID-19 in the area if the victim clicks on a link leading to a malicious website, or makes a Bitcoin payment.

The NFIB expects these figures to rise as the virus continues to spread across the globe.

To protect yourself, do not click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails or respond to unsolicited messages that ask for your personal details.

Try to research any companies or people you purchase something from, asking a family member or friend for advice before you pay.

Where possible, use a credit card to pay for purchases as most major providers insure online purchases.

Common symptoms of COVID-19 include a cough, a high temperature, and shortness of breath.

If you believe you might have the virus, contact 111 and try to isolate yourself. Do not attend your GP or A&E.

To prevent catching the illness, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds as often as you can.

Use hand sanitiser if soap and water is unavailable and try to avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth if your hands are not clean.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, your sleeve, or your elbow, when you cough or sneeze.

Just popped into my local Lidl for a few beers and smoked salmon and there is absolutely no bog roll left.

There was around 12 4 packs of kitchen roll left although that’s a bit rough on the old arris

Well one thing is that those who bought all the cheap Lidl toilet roll are in for a shock with having a blocked loo everytime they use it as having experienced this issue previously.

A good payback for when they are constantly having to put the marrigolds on to sort it out. Very Happy

45 more cases today bringing it to a total of 209 infections.

Summer can't come quick enough really which could potentially kill this virus off here.

It covers aspects that our government has not so far notified us of.

We found it helpful. I hope you will too.

Last evening dining out with friends, one of their uncles, who's graduated with a master's degree and who worked in Shenzhen Hospital (Guangdong Province, China) sent him the following notes on Coronavirus for guidance:
1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold
2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of just 26/27 degrees. It hates the Sun.
4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.
5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours - so if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands as soon as you can with a bacterial soap.
6. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent will kill it.
7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink liquids with ice.
8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.
9. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.
10. Can't emphasise enough - drink plenty of water!
THE SYMPTOMS
1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat lasting 3/4 days
2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days further.
3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like you're drowning. It's imperative you then seek immediate attention.

JUST FUCK OFF.

It's getting rather worrying for the Italians with 36 deaths from the coronavirus today making it a total of 233.

Anyone know if all these are elderly?

Lockdown is now happening in 11 provinces there now.

The global death toll has now hit 3,000 with 100,000 cases now confirmed worldwide.

I thought the advice from a medic dealing with the outbreak on the front line in China would be useful and appreciated because it contains extra info we haven't been told over here.

Clearly, sadly, can't help some folk!!

Quite right too, Okocha.

I put it down to the BSE-15 virus (Bowt'n supporters encephalitis). Its been around for years but became really infectious in 2015. There's still no known cure.

Is this the same bloke in your pub who told you all about Ron Billionaire buying the club from Anderson, for you to come on here and tell us all about it?

The same one you told us it was definitely true when I laughed at you believing such bollocks from some one in the pub telling you a tall tale to swallow?

I wonder if Ron Billionaire spent his money on another football club - no, or maybe another type of sports club - no, or any type of business whatever in Britain - no.

Seems he only wanted BWFC then?

Must be a big fan of ours then - no!

(It still makes me laugh you totally believing such utter drivel).

Are you still banging on trying to refute something you have been unable and never will be able to prove? FFS accept that you have no idea and get a life you sad muppet.

Just to get back on topic for a moment, another UK 64 cases in the last 24 hours so the spread is accelerating.

Hahaha!

Ok then, what irrefutable proof have you got other than some bloke told you about it down the pub?

Absolutely none!

As for getting a life, I'm not the one droning on in every other post about playing football with blokes nearly fifty years younger than yourself AND running rings around them.

Like that really happens.

Walter Mitty has nothing compared with your fantasies.

My life might be pretty tame in comparison but at least it is real and not made up.

Unlike some...

I see the FA are considering banning the over 70's from games, not sure how they hope to police that.

Seems a bit tough on Crystal Palace as Roy Hodgson is 72.

New case of coronavirus in Bolton

One more case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Bolton.

This brings the total number to two for the town.

The second case was confirmed by Public Health England today.

Residents are advised to spend 20 seconds washing their hands - humming the 'Happy birthday' tune to yourself will help you time how long to keep them under a tap.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that for "most people who catch this virus, it's relatively mild, and a bad cough".

He said the number of home ventilation kits are being expanded and that "the NHS, I am sure, will rise to the challenge" of dealing with the coronavirus outbreak.

More to follow.

Supermarkets place restrictions on food and anti-bacterial products

Supermarkets have placed restrictions on items including pasta, anti-bacterial wipes and hand soap in a bid to prevent shoppers from stockpiling.

Shelves across the country have been emptied of goods, including toilet paper, after Public Health England urged members of the public to "plan ahead" for if they had to self-isolate for a couple of weeks.

However, the Government's chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance said there is "absolutely no reason" for the British public to panic buy.

Tesco has almost entirely sold out of dried pasta online and has now introduced a five limit number on several items, including anti-bacterial wipes, gels, and long-life milk.

No other supermarket has resorted to rationing food, however the majority are now limiting anti-bacterial gels to two per customer - or have sold out entirely.

The full list of restrictions at each supermarket is as follows:

Tesco

Five-item limit on a number of items including pasta, anti-bacterial wipes, gels and sprays, and long-life milk. Started online on Sunday morning and in stores on Saturday afternoon.

Waitrose

Only online at the moment, and only includes restrictions on certain anti-bacterial soaps and wipes.

Morrisons

No restrictions on any items at the moment.

Aldi

Has not yet responded, but ant-bacterial hand gel is not available online.

Asda

Hand sanitiser restricted to two per person both in-store and online. No food restrictions. Many anti-bacterial products out of stock online.

Sainsbury's

No limits on any purchases.

Lidl

Did not confirm any restrictions.

Ocado

Has not yet responded, but no limits on products online.

As of 9am on Sunday, 273 people had been diagnosed with Covid-19 - an increase of 67 from the 206 cases confirmed at on Saturday. It represents the largest day-on-day increase in diagnoses.

Coronavirus concerns appear to have created an international rush for toilet paper. Two women have been charged after a fight broke out over toilet roll in an Australian supermarket, with a video of the altercation shared widely online.

Hand sanitiser products were also found to be selling for more than 5,000% their recommended retail price online, with bottles worth 49p selling for £24.99

One eBay listing has seen a second-hand bottle of liquid soap sell for more than £5 - despite being only three-quarters full.
