Personally I rate Rice and would go with him as the only holding midfielder. Play attacking flair players like Foden, Grealish and Mount (if he's available). Poor German side but they will be solid and hard to break down. We need to get after them from the start.

All totally irrelevant really. We're going out on Penalties.

Well done to the Czechs and hard luck to the Portugese. England? I can't remember an England team that I'd less interest in.

Well there was certainly some entertaining games last night! The French were terrible in the first half then turned it around only to fall apart again. Well done to the Swiss as they battled and never gave up.

The winner of Italy vs Belgium next week will win this tournament now i reckon, i think the Italians have by far the best defence so i'll go with them.

To be honest, I’m not impressed by any of the teams I’ve seen so far and all are beatable. England don’t seem to have got out of second gear yet so if they can ratchet it up tonight then I don’t fear anyone.

Absolutely right, so this is Gareth's moment to become a legend.

Ditch the two holding midfielders and go out to win the game rather than not lose it.

There's talk of us playing 343 today but i bet he will still play Phillips and Rice.

I would go 433, play one holding midfielder and just go for it. The German defence looks shaky and will panic with the likes of Grealish, Sterling and Saka running at them.

Just seen the team.

Two right backs, two holding midfielders and no Grealish!

The man is taking the piss. We'll lose, of that there is no doubt.

Shame on Gareth.

It is 343 then, plenty of width but no creativity in the middle of the park.

Negative team that...

I don't think England have shown what it takes to go all the way. We're not creative enough, we're not positive enough...

If the last few games have shown us anything, getting a goal, or two in front means nothing. Teams can and do fight back. If we get ahead we need to keep going and kill teams off.

Things happen when you drive at defenders, as Sterling did, but you need front men to make themselves available for passes. Kane finally managed to do that!

I'll take it but for fooks sake we should have been down by two.

Grealish had a hand in both goals -- would seem to me that he can start the next one.

Great result, but I'm not having it that Gareth had a master plan.

We were absolutely dire for 75 minutes, we could and should have been two down before we scored. Until Grealish came on we were absolutely no threat whatsoever.

We lost the central midfield battle again with both holding midfielders playing way too deep. Neither seems capable of passing the ball quickly forward which is why Henderson must come in.

Credit to the defence and keeper, but how the fook Muller missed that simple chance right after we scored is beyond me.

It'll be interesting to see how Gareth sets up for the next game, surely it won't be two holding midfielders against a team we should beat?

We also had 3 decent chances before our goal...so don’t see why we should have been 2 down.

I thought Southgate got it spot on today against very comparable opposition. Three at the back looked pretty good to me after a nervy start and enabled our front 3 to play closer together and be much more effective. It got Kane his goal, Sterling his third and we beat the Germans by a 2 goal margin. What is there to complain about?

It's dull to watch but we had all better accept the fact that we aren't going to play exciting free-flowing football because Southgate ain't listening to anyone but himself. Can't see him changing much in the next game either, unless he decides to start Henderson, and why should he? W3, D1, L0 without conceding a goal. He will only be remembered by how far he took us in this tournament and not by how cavalier we were in defeat.

Enjoy it! You've had enough practice watching shite football since Megson took over in 2007 so surely you can tolerate it for another couple of weeks.

COME ON ENGLAND!

Ps. Sluffy, I'm not responding if you defend Megson Very Happy

Just got home.. think it’s time to admit Gareth knows best - having the flexibility to change formation like that to completely nullify top quality opposition says it all - we haven’t had a manager willing/able to do that in my lifetime.

When I saw the lineup I was fuming but let’s face it, he got it spot on - and I doubt we’ll see same again on Saturday. MOTM was Walker for me, what a performance he’s so much better as a RCB - but surely GS will revert to 4 at the back in the Quarters. My only other change would be Grealish in from the start, what a player that boy is.

I was concerned when i saw the team, it did look defensive and we started poorly but we gradually got into the game. I was one questioning before the first game why Sterling was starting but he's been brilliant so far.

We'll never have a better chance of reaching a major final, come on England!

Anyone else think that not winning the whole thing now would constitute failure?

Still some good teams in the other half of the draw, we could end up laying Italy. Belgium or Spain if we got to the final and they are teams who can keep the ball and pass better than us. They are the types of teams we've fell short against in the recent past.

France, the best team at the tournament, are out, although I don't know how they contrived to lose against the Swiss, but we won't get an easy ride from what's left. However, Belgium, Italy, and Spain, have looked no better than workmanlike, and I see this as a great opportunity to at least make the final.

Today Southgate is a hero - up to 75 minutes in and all last week we wanted his head. Funny how a couple of goals can change opinions.
I still think our boring slow approach will cost us in the end - and the shame of it with good players parked on the bench.
Still looking forward to Saturday though.

Agree Bonce, with the teams on our side we have to get to the final. Could do with a strong performance next game thought, doesn’t feel like we’ve really played well at any point yet.

I'd put us in the workmanlike camp too.

Every nation knows how defensively we set up and if they let us score then there's every chance they'll go out. I don't expect to see (m)any more exciting or high-scoring games and wouldn't be surprised if teams are just happy to take us to penalties from now on.

Ukraine needs to be dealt with in 90 minutes, no extra time nonsense, and if we can't beat them then I'd agree with the tournament having been a failure although nice to have beaten the Germans.

Italy and Spain could go either way. Not much between us and them from what I've seen so far and I wouldn't be surprised if we win or lose against either of them.

I fear Belgium the most. Someone should clatter De Bruyne and E Hazard early on because they clearly aren't fully fit but could cause us so much damage. I'm not convinced we have the nous to deal with either of them and Lukaku no doubt has a point to prove against England.

Semi-finals minimum expectation but it's a crap-shoot from then on.
