MATCH REPORT: Accrington Stanley Reserves 3-3 Wanderers Reserves 13003916

The points were shared as Wanderers kicked off their Central League Cup campaign with a thrilling 3-3 draw against Accrington Stanley.

George Thomason and Mitchell Henry gave the Whites a commanding lead at the break, but Stanley hit back through a Jovan Malcolm brace and an Alex Baptiste own goal.

Nathan Delfouneso struck a vital goal in the final stages to salvage a point for Sam Hird’s side.

Hird named a strong starting XI featuring the likes of Matt Gilks, Alex Baptiste, Will Aimson, Andrew Tutte and Nathan Delfouneso.

Stanley also named a strong side including Toby Savin, Seamus Conneely, Joel Mumbongo and Malcolm.

Wanderers went in front inside the opening 10 minutes when Thomason found space in the box and beat Savin with a composed finish.

Moments later, Delfouneso found Thomason with an inviting cross but the midfielder couldn’t keep his header down.

Aimson then rose well at the far post to meet Andrew Tutte’s out-swinging corner but his effort wasn’t troubling Savin.

Just after the half-hour mark, Henry added a second from close range after Baptiste’s effort had been saved.

Early in the second half, Stanley pulled one back when Malcolm fired home from Yeboah Amankwah’s low cross from the right wing.

And the Reds drew level when Baptiste inadvertently looped the ball over the helpless Gilks.

Stanley completed the turnaround just after the hour-mark when Malcolm turned well and fired a pinpoint strike into the bottom corner.

And things went from bad to worse for the Whites when Tutte was forced off through injury, with Frimpong replacing the experienced midfielder.

But Wanderers got back on level terms inside the final 10 minutes when Delfouneso slotted home after some good work by Tweedley.

Accrington: Savin, Procter, Amankwah, Leigh, Moonan, Conneely (Mansell), Nolan, Perritt, Scully, Mumbongo (Coyle), Malcolm (Stowe)

Bolton: Gilks, Comley, Aimson, Senior, Baptiste, Thomason, Tutte (Frimpong), Conway (Tweedley), Henry, Wilcox (Toure), Delfouneso
