Eidur Gudjohnsen has fired out a warning to the rest of the Championship that he is only just getting warmed up at Wanderers.

He might be 36, with much of a glittering playing career behind him, but the Icelander insists he is only now starting to find his feet during a second spell with the Whites.

“I knew I’d need games,” he told The Bolton News. “I knew there would be spells where my energy levels felt up and down but I’m getting fitter by the week and I know I’m going to be a lot stronger in the second half of this season.

“It’s definitely going in the right direction for me.”

Neil Lennon has had to rely more on his veteran strike force of Gudjohnsen and Emile Heskey than he would have liked after injuries decimated his attacking options – and both will play a part against Sheffield Wednesday today.

But Gudjohnsen is not complaining about the extra workload – and thinks he will benefit from playing from the start at Hillsborough.

“I don’t mind it,” he said. “To get fit and stay fit you just have to get as many games under your belt as possible. You can train as much as you want but it is about the games.”

After scoring his first Bolton goal in 15 years against Leeds United last weekend, Gudjohnsen is hungry for more.

Wanderers could use a fillip after some indifferent performances in the last few weeks, when their climb up the table has stalled.

And Gudjohnsen says only hard work will see results improve in the coming weeks.

“It’s a very thin line in this division,” he said. “It is about being the better team in the day, every weekend. Quality wise, every team is at a similar level.

“It is about playing the better football, having the confidence and strength to get into a battle when needed. And to be superior in possession.

“Against Leeds I don’t think we managed that. I got a goal and for that I am pleased, of course, but the performance can be a lot better.

“We have to get back to finding our best form.

“It is a very tight league and every team has their qualities and it is about being right on the day. We know we can do better.”
