Neil Lennon says his Bolton Wanderers side didn’t get themselves a chance after falling to defeat at Nottingham Forest.
After Ben Amos’ sending off and the conceding of a penalty early in the piece, Bolton were eventually well beaten at The City Ground.
And speaking after the game the manager was left frustrated that his side were unable to build on a positive showing against Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the week.
“For the first goal we had possession of the ball and we let the man get away,” Lennon said after the game. “Jamie Ward gets through on goal and we find ourselves a goal and a man down. We were chasing our tails after Ben was sent off.
“Then, we allowed a cross into the box from the wide area and there was no challenge on the header for the second goal. This is all really early on in the game and we have given ourselves a mountain to climb.
“When you’re down to ten men you have to change things around. I thought that the two central midfield players put in a real shift, as did Wellington Silva.
“Rob Holding once again had another good game playing in a few different positions across the back line, but they are all small positives out of a game we felt we could get something out of.
“We lost David Wheater midway through the second half. It looks like a hamstring injury and we could possibly be without him for between six and eight weeks, but we’ll have to see what the full prognosis is.
“We’re inconsistent and that’s why we’re bottom of the league. We can’t string two performances together for some reason.
“We prepared well for the game and then there is nothing we can do when we give away sloppy goals through individual errors. This was a game we felt like we could get something from.
“We’ve just got to keep going. We have two really important games coming up next week, two of which we have to be winning. The gap to safety is now seven points, so it isn’t insurmountable.”
