Frustrated Wanderers boss Neil Lennon says keeper Ben Amos must “look at himself” after two precious points slipped through his grasp against QPR.

Matt Phillips snatched a draw for the West Londoners three minutes into injury time at the Macron with a low 20-yard effort, leaving the Whites boss questioning his side’s defending in the final stages.

The gap to safety has been narrowed slightly to six points but a share of the spoils against QPR was hard to take, with a difficult trip to play-off chasing Birmingham City to come tomorrow night.

“It feels like a defeat,” Lennon said after the final whistle. “The manner of the goal: It shouldn’t get to the point that he has a shot and then Ben should save it. We have to look at ourselves. There was no danger.

“Sometimes you have to take a foul, be more professional. We have to see the game out better.

“I’m screaming ‘just stay on your feet’ but Dean went down to easily and let Phillips inside to shoot.

“Even then, for me, Ben should save it – it is the middle of the goal and he has let it go under him. If you are getting beat from 20 yards out from the middle of the goal then you have to look at yourself.

“The most galling thing is that we have let QPR off the hook.”

Wanderers go to St Andrew’s tomorrow without Emile Heskey, who suffered a hip strain, and hoping that goal-scorer Zach Clough comes through unscathed after leaving the field with cramp.

Clough’s brilliant goal – his fourth of the season – lit up an otherwise dull game on Saturday and provided Lennon with some hope that the survival fight is still on.

“It was magnificent,” he said. “It’s a contender for goal of the season.

“He could have had another with the bicycle kick and went close with a header.

“He makes us better but he is struggling to find his very best fitness and form. He had to come off with cramp but he’s a special player and it was certainly a special goal.

“There is hope when you see things like that, and we are playing well, but we have to kill off games. We can’t defend like that when you’re in the final two minutes.”
