The University of Bolton's name will appear on the new Bolton Wanderers kit.

The university has been announced as the football club’s “proud” new sponsor.

This is the third time the university has had its brand emblazoned on the club shirt.

A university spokesman said: “The university’s name will appear proudly on the club’s latest shirt in a spirit of collaboration with the new chairman. The university wishes the club every success under the new arrangements. The university will continue to assist the club in any way feasible.”

The university’s logo first appeared on the shirt in 2013 when Wanderers scrapped their controversial deal with payday lender QuickQuid and turned to the firm FibrLec.

The sponsorship deal is in association with Keating Supercars, based in Astley.

Dr Tony Keating, of Keating Supercars, jointly runs FibrLec.

The sponsorship deal is said to benefit students, who will be provided with opportunities at the football club.

The spokesman said: “The University of Bolton continues to work with BWFC, notwithstanding its recent difficult times, and is proud of the club and town.

“The university regards itself as central to the community of Bolton and therefore shares a lot in common with the football club. The university’s spin-out company FibrLec was principal spon - sor of BWFC for two seasons — 2013-14 and 2014-15.

“The university is delighted, thanks to the ongoing generosity of Keating Supercars, to be able to show in such a visible way our ongoing commitment to the club in its new era.”

Thank goodness the era of small time tin pot sponsors is over.

Did you know that the University of Bolton is currently ranked 105th out of Great Britain's 119 university's?

Obviously the University is looking to attract high achieving students from places like Scunthorpe, Doncaster, Fleetwood and other hot beds of academia we will be visiting next season in League 1.

It's factual information though mate.

Anyway why would a university want to sponsor a football club shirt for if it didn't want its name to be seen?

Where will the name be seen other than in its own town - in places we play - ergo Scunthorpe, Doncaster, Fleetwood, etc.

Why would they want the youth of Scunthorpe, etc to see their advert if not to hopefully attract interest?

I would hope that if people have enough brains to go to university then they use them to find the best one for them and not go to the one they might have seen on the shirts of some rival football team their club once played!

If that indeed was the reason it attracted next years intake then I can't see us climbing the university league table very quickly over the next few years then!

One Bolton University student ( well B.I.T student)  from Scunthorpe was Horward Devoto. He and Pete Shelley were awarded Honorary Degrees a few years ago. Some of you older ones may remember they formed The Buzzcocks while studying at Bolton.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Bolton Uni and Bolton Council didn’t look very closely at putting a joint bid in for the club actually. They seem increasing keen to get involved in speculative business schemes away from what their core business is supposed to be.

I would rather they concentrated on improving the poor performance where they are supposed to be the experts first.
