Rob Holding has earned a last-minute call-up to the England Under-21 squad for the Toulon Tournament.

Gareth Southgate called on the Wanderers defender on Saturday after Everton's Brendon Galloway dropped out through injury.

Holding was told he would be flying out with the Young Lions in the Macron dugout as he helped John McGinlay’s Legends team as assistant manager.

He will now feature in the squad for at least four games against Portugal, Guinea, Paraguay and Japan.

Holding has been subject to a rejected bid from Arsenal already this summer but the Gunners’ chance of stealing him on the cheap are looking slim now that he has joined the international ranks.

Speaking before his call-up was announced, the 20-year-old academy graduate insisted he was not getting wrapped up in transfer stories and still looking ahead at next season with Wanderers.

“I don’t know what the situation is at the moment,” he said. “It’s all upstairs and they are dealing with it. As far as I am concerned I’m playing for Bolton and preparing myself for the start of next season in League One.

“This is the club I want to get back into the Championship and beyond.”
