Phil Parkinson is looking back at some of Wanderers’ video nasties from last season in an effort to understand his squad better.

The new boss and his staff have brushed up on the players they inherited by analysing key games from the Championship relegation campaign.

Wanderers dropped down to League One for the first time in 23 years, losing a record 26 games and are currently on a run of more than a year without a win away from home.

And though Parkinson is keen to strike the disastrous season from the memory banks it has not stopped him watching back some of the gory details as he welcomes the players back for the first time tomorrow for health and fitness checks.

“We are looking at every aspect of the squad, including the games last season,” he told The Bolton News. “And we are sure that individually there is more to come.

“The younger lads have definitely got more to offer and I think it’s important that they draw a line through last season and start again.

“We are looking forward to working with them and getting to know their characters as we go along. It’s a good six-week pre-season so there will be plenty of time to find out how we work.”

Parkinson has sounded out a number of potential signings over the last couple of weeks which are believed to include Millwall defender Mark Beevers, ex-Burnley goalkeeper Matt Gilks and one of his former Bradford City charges, striker Jamie Proctor.

It is still a waiting game for the Whites boss, however, as the transfer embargo remains in place and prevents him from being able to table firm contract offers to the players he wants.

It is also difficult at this stage of the summer to assess what budget Wanderers will give their new manager for signings. Parkinson is currently looking at players out of contract but may be able to offer transfer fees if the club are able to move on some of their bigger earners.

Players will report individually for cardiac screening tomorrow, which has become a staple part of pre-season in the last few years.

Ever since Fabrice Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest playing for Bolton in an FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in March 2012, the FA and PFA have lobbied for screening to be factored in as part of every club’s summer preparations.

Phil Parkinson: “I understand what I am coming into, honestly, I am not walking around doe-eyed looking at the stadium and how great everything is, ignoring the bolts and nuts.” he told The Bolton News.
