Jay Spearing faces an injury lay-off after damaging his medial knee ligaments in the 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers.

The Wanderers skipper made his return after suspension at the Macron Stadium but withdrew from the game at half time following a crunching tackle on Rovers striker Ellis Harrison.

A crestfallen Phil Parkinson admitted the club faced an anxious wait to hear whether the midfielder’s season was over.

“He has done his medial ligament,” he told The Bolton News. “He’s such a warrior that he wanted to stay on but there was no way he could have done it after half time.

“It was a big blow for us.

“It’s difficult to say how long he might be out for. We can look at him tomorrow morning when the swelling has gone down. We’ll probably know in the next 48 hours.”

Wanderers failed to build on Josh Vela’s early goal and Rovers – unbeaten in their last six – deservedly drew level through Byron Moore after dominating the second half.

Parkinson’s side have themselves lost just one in six yet results elsewhere made their failure to protect the lead all the more galling.

“It wasn’t a good enough performance, we know that, and we look a disjointed team at the moment,” the manager said. “In the end I was pleased to get the point.

“All the things going on at the moment – losing Gary Madine, and the captain, having to take Reece Wabara off because it was his first game, then conceding a goal down that side, it isn’t easy to take.

“But we have to be better as a team. We need to be more creative.”
