Well beaten by Sheffield United, the Whites – tipped for the drop in many quarters – have raced out of the blocks in this campaign, starting with 10 points from five games.

Though Saturday’s 3-0 defeat means they lost ground on the top two, that Bolton is being mentioned in the same bracket as the early pace-setters shows what an outstanding start it has been.

And, ahead of travelling to Preston this weekend, those at the club are determined to put on a better show at their north-west rivals.

“We believe we can go into every game with confidence, “ said defender Mark Beevers. “Once you get a first win on the board it breeds confidence and we feel we can go into every game and get something out of it.

“That’s massive and, looking at the table before the season started, it’s a tough league, there are some big clubs in it so I would imagine we’d have been up against it with the bookies but we’re here to prove them wrong.

We’ve got a great set here – but it is only the start, we need to push and go again.

“You can imagine when you’ve got the points we have early on the lads are going to be on a high and that’s a massive thing in the camp as well.

“We enjoy coming in to training, we’re not coming on the back of defeats every week and the points are on the board, so that breeds confidence and puts smiles on faces. It’s up to us to keep them there.”

And, like his side’s supporters, Phil Parkinson is hoping he will see a reaction to being outplayed when they head for Deepdale on Saturday.

A chance to rest and recuperate over the international break comes once that game is in the record books, and the manager is insisting they end the first phase of the season on a high.

“The key now is to finish this block of games with a good result,” he said. “We came into the week with two home games – six points from them would have been great, four very good, but three’s good, it’s a tough division.

“When you get the three early the week, in the first game, obviously you’ve got a great chance to build on that. We didn’t but it’s not a major crisis – we’ve only lost one game.”
