It is understood Southampton’s Sam Gallagher is one of the many options being considered – although the deal being offered by the Premier League club is at the very top end of Phil Parkinson’s budget.

The 22-year-old has spent time with Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City in the Championship and has also been linked with Aston Villa and Sheffield United.

He came off the bench on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup victory at Brighton to make his first appearance for the Saints since 2014. But despite his lack of game time, Gallagher is highly rated by Mark Hughes and a premium price is being charged for him to go out on loan this season.

Parkinson has given his chairman Ken Anderson a list of potential targets which range from Premier League squad players, like Gallagher, to lower league players with potential to play at a higher level and players based abroad.

MK Dons’ Chuks Aneke remains a possibility, and information from the Midlands suggest Bolton have also enquired about Burton Albion’s Liam Boyce.

The 27-year-old is an international team-mate of Josh Magennis with Northern Ireland and also played alongside midfielder Luke Murphy with the Brewers last season.

Although the transfer window closed three weeks ago, players can still move to clubs on a loan with a view to a permanent move in January.

Wanderers have scope in their budget but refused to pay over the odds for both Joe Garner and Charlie Wyke earlier this month.

They have also made a sizeable saving in their wage budget after allowing Adam Le Fondre to leave for Sydney FC a fortnight ago.

League rules allow Wanderers to name five loanees in a matchday squad and have eight such deals in total. Parkinson has thus far added Jonathan Grounds, Joe Williams, Remi Matthews and Yanic Wildschut on loan.
