Wanderers earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Derby County thanks to Craig Noone's 10th minute header on a dramatic day at the University of Bolton Stadium.

There were no shortage of excellent performances in Phil Parkinson's side, but who came out on top? Marc Iles gives his thoughts.

WANDERERS (4-2-3-1)

REMI MATTHEWS…7.5 In for the injured Alnwick, Matthews came up with the goods when his team really needed it at the end, saving from Mount. Played a part in the goal, too.

PAWEL OLKOWSKI…7.5 Had to check his usual non-stop service down the right hand side to dig in with the defensive effort. Showed he is equally prepared to dig in, when necessary.

DAVID WHEATER…8 Back in the side after a surprise omission against Ipswich – Wheater coped with everything thrown into the penalty box and looked comfortable alongside Hobbs.

JACK HOBBS…8.5 The ball had a magnetic attraction to Hobbs in the penalty box and the challenge on Waghorn to prevent a shot on goal with a few minutes to go summed up the whole effort. MOM.

JONATHAN GROUNDS…7.5 Steve Parkin had asked fans to cut him some slack as he got completely up to speed, and here was compelling evidence of his Championship quality.

JASON LOWE…8 Huge return to form for the midfielder, who was right in the thick of the action from the first whistle. Gave Derby no space to get at the Bolton back four.

JOE WILLIAMS…7.5 Another mature performance from the young Evertonian, replete with all the snarling and snapping we have come to expect.

CRAIG NOONE…8 A well-taken header and an emotional celebration aside, the winger just never stopped running. Stephen Darby will have relished every moment of his team mate’s performance.

ERHUN OZTUMER…8 His wings clipped at Ipswich, this allowed Ozzie to show off his skills on home soil to full effect. Always searching for the ball and willing to put his foot in, too.

WILL BUCKLEY…8 Another Herculean effort from the winger who recovered from an early miss to create Noone’s goal and provide Wanderers’ biggest attacking threat of the game.

JOSH MAGENNNIS…7.5 Ran himself to a standstill and kept Derby’s defence on alert despite doing so alone at times. Hugely appreciated by the supporters.

Subs: O’Neil 74 (for Noone) – The game needed his energy late on.

Doidge 74 (for Magennis) – Carried on where Magennis had left off.

Vela 85 (for Oztumer) – Saw the result home.

Not used: Williams, Beevers, Donaldson, Wildschut.

Derby County (4-2-3-1): Carson; Bogle, Keogh, Tomori, Forsyth; Bryson, Johnson; Bennett, Mount, Wilson; Nugent.

Subs: Marriott 56 (for Bennett), Lawrence 56 (for Nugent), Waghorn 77 (for Wilson) Not used: Roos, Wisdom, Huddlestone, Malone.

Referee: Scott Duncan 2/10

Downright puzzling, at times.

Attendance: 14,096
