Wanderers are taking a look at former Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers striker Marvin Emnes on trial.

The 30-year-old Dutchman has been on the lookout for a new club since leaving Vancouver Whitecaps at the end of the MLS season.

Phil Parkinson has been on the lookout for a free agent striker since losing out on Sheffield United’s Ched Evans on transfer deadline day.

It is understood he has now invited Emnes in to train at Lostock, although speaking last week he urged fans to temper their expectations.

“There are a couple of people we’ve spoken to but like I’ve said before I don’t want the supporters thinking there’s going to be a ready-made striker coming in the building,” he told The Bolton News.

Emnes was persistently linked with a move to Bolton in Owen Coyle’s time as manager, during a six-season spell on Teesside with Boro.

He played 161 times at the Riverside, scoring 31 goals, before moving on to Swansea City and then eventually linking up with Coyle at Blackburn in 2016.

Emnes was released at the Liberty Stadium in 2017 and signed a three-year deal with Turkish club Akhisar Belediyespor which ended prematurely with just seven first team appearances. He then moved on to Canada, where again he failed to settle, leaving the Whitecaps without playing a competitive game.

I'd be amazed if he gets anywhere near the level of fitness and form he had 4 years ago - and that's what would be required for him to add any value to the squad.
No disrespect intended to the Vancouver Whitecaps, but if he can't get a game for them what chance would he have of competing in the Championship?
