Wanderers’ attempts to ease a fixture backlog by reorganising their Leasing.com Trophy match at Accrington for this weekend have ground to a halt.

The club has confirmed that discussions with Stanley have ended following efforts to move the December 3 cup tie to Saturday.

Lancashire Police voiced concerns after noting pockets of crowd trouble in Saturday’s League One encounter but also face potential logistical issues with the original date, which clashes with Burnley’s Premier League match at home to Manchester City. December 10 has also been mooted by both clubs as a compromise.

Wanderers have three ‘floating’ fixtures to reorganise, including the controversial visit of Doncaster Rovers, which will go ahead regardless of the outcome of their disciplinary hearing.

The EFL want the match played “as soon as possible” but counting the Leasing.com tie Bolton already have six games next month.

Postponed matches against Lincoln City and Burton Albion are also to be factored in but efforts to play the Lincoln game this weekend were also turned down on police advice last week.

Meanwhile, Wanderers expect to hear the outcome of their appeal against Josh Earl’s red card at Accrington on Thursday.

The on-loan Preston North End defender was sent off by referee Anthony Backhouse for denying a goal or obvious goal-scoring opportunity when he pulled back Stanley midfielder Dion Charles.

It is hoped that his ban – most likely one game - will be quashed, although he would be available for the cup tie at the Wham Stadium if it remains on December 3 as the competition adheres to different rules on suspension.

Wanderers have also confirmed that the Under-18s’ FA Youth Cup third round game against Millwall will take place at the UniBol on Wednesday, December 4 (kick-off 7pm).

Tickets for the game are £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.
