Antoni Sarcevic has been named captain of Bolton Wanderers.

The influential midfielder has worn the armband for most of pre-season, leading the side out for last night's final friendly at home to Crewe Alexandra, which the Whites lost 3-0.

And manager Ian Evatt confirmed that the former Fleetwood and Plymouth man would skipper the side for the 2020/21 campaign.

"Antoni Sarcevic will be captain," said the Wanderers boss.

"He's a leader and he's a big character in the changing room.

"He's a local boy and he's ever so proud to play for Bolton Wanderers, it means the world to him.

"He's worked his whole life to play for a club like this so he deserves to carry that armband and carry this team forward, it's as simple as that."

Sarcevic is one of 15 new signings, arriving at the University of Bolton Stadium in the summer after winning promotion from League Two with Plymouth Argyle.

And Evatt feels his side's freshness was a factor in defeat to Crewe, in a behind closed doors friendly, with all of the goals conceded in the second half.

"Crewe are a good side. Some of them have been together for a long time and grown up together and that was the difference for me between the two teams," said the Wanderers boss.

"Their details were there, their pass detail, their movement, the timing of runs off each other.

“They have relationships all over the pitch that have taken time to grow. Ours are still developing and they are going to develop over a period of time. We just need that time to really come together."

He added: "I think it was a really good game, two teams that try to play in the right way at a high tempo, good intensity, some good quality.

“ It was a very good football match and unfortunately we've lost it probably by conceding two really poor goals at the start of the second half.

"There was lots of promise but also lots of things to work on."
