Starts today - one of sports greatest events.

Spread over three days it builds into a crescendo of emotions by the end of the thirs days singles matches.

Being played in Chicago so the play will start early for us this side of the pond but very much worthwhile following if you can.

News for today’s start

-

Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell will begin Europe's defence when the 39th Ryder Cup begins at Medinah on Friday.

The Northern Irishmen will kick off the foursomes matches at 0720 (1320 BST) against Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker.

Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia resume their unbeaten partnership against Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley.

Lee Westwood and Francesco Molinari take on Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson, while Ian Poulter and Justin Rose face Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker.

The one slight surprise for Europe was that Italy's Molinari was paired with Westwood, but Europe captain Jose Maria Olazabal defended his decision.

"It might surprise you, but when you look at Francesco's game, he's a steady player," said Olazabal, who played in seven Ryder Cups.

"He's straight off the tee, he hits good iron shots. When I look at foursomes, I want to have players who are consistent and are steady from tee to green."

The European side have won four of the last five Ryder Cups and six of the last eight against the USA, including two years ago in Wales.

The Open, OK. Occasional round of pitch & put, fine. Re-runs of Caddyshack, no problem - but the hoo-ha surrounding the Ryder Cup is just baffling.

It's the USA v Europe with all the pomp and glory. I always found it a fascinating event on terrestrial TV but since Sky acquired it I have somewhat lost interest.

It's probably the hardest sport in the world to be Number 1 at. There are so many factors that can go wrong. A sudden change in wind direction, the bill hitting a divot and going out of bounds.

The level of skill required is phenomenal.

Not to mention somebody shouting "GET IN THE HOLE!!!!!" just as you're playing your stroke.

Have to agree with RT on this, I love the ryder cup and any major golf competition but with sky taking it this year I can't really get myself up for it this time around. I will probably watch the highlights on the BBC.

It's turning into a bit of a white wash, 9-4 to the US at the moment, if things stay as they are now in the fourball games it will end 11-5 going into the last day.

Well, 10-6 is a whole lot better than 11-5, but it is going to be a tall order !

Yesterday we were 10-4 down at one point.

Justin ' Lancashire ' Rose beats Mickelson to make it 11-11!

How Justin Rose managed to win was unbelievable.

I reckon Zach Johnson has won it for the USA. His victory over McDowell has given them a 12-11 lead and I think it might be a bridge too far for Europe.
