Evatt: Defeat Would Have Been A Travesty Large

Wanderers left it late but boss Ian Evatt felt it would have been a travesty had his side seen their unbeaten home run ended by Morecambe.

It took a 94th-minute strike from substitute Jon Dadi Bodvarsson to earn the Whites a 1-1 draw.

And Evatt insisted that was the least Wanderers deserved as the gap behind the play-off places remained at seven points.

“We’re all a bit down because it was a game we should have win but we did a lot of things right,” said the Wanderers’ manager.

“Some of our play was exceptional at times and it would have been a travesty not to get something out the game.

“I’m delighted they got back into it because some of our play – especially in the first half – was as good as you’ll see.

“It feels like two points dropped but you never know, that might be a big point come the end of the season.

“We believe we are on the right path. If it (reaching the play-offs) happens this year or not, we have to finish strongly to make sure next we are really competitive and I believe this group of players can be.”

Wanderers dominated most of the contest as they chased a seventh successive home win.

And Evatt admitted they needed to be more ruthless to kill off a Morecambe side fighting against relegation and within seconds of securing a first away win since November as they defended in depth after Cole Stockton’s first-half strike.

“We had 80 per cent possession and 22 shots. It’s a game we really should have won and that has to be a learning curve for us all,” added Evatt.

Evatt: Defeat Would Have Been A Travesty Bakayoko-chance

“There are no gimmes in this league and as our reputation builds and grows and more teams are going to come and do that, that first goal becomes vitally important.

“When you create chances that we did, you have to make sure you take them.

“I thought we were unbelievable at times in the first half but against teams like that and you can create that many chances you have to score. We have to be more ruthless and clinical.

“We gifted them a goal and then they’ve got a little bit more spirit and little bit more belief and they are hanging on and it becomes really, really difficult.

“In the second half we became a bit panicky and a bit emotional at times.

“The one time we did we move the ball with speed and tempo and two-touch around the box we scored.

“Jon came on and got us what could be a vital goal. We did a lot right tonight. It would have been a travesty had we not got something out the game. But we feel we deserved to win it.”
