'Just instinct' - Bodvarsson on his moment of magic against 17749558

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson picked the perfect time to score his first league goal of the season.

The Icelandic striker provided a clever finish against Wycombe to guide Kyle Dempsey’s drilled cross into the bottom corner.

It proved to be a crucial moment in the contest after Luke Leahy pulled one back from the penalty spot in the final stages.

Bodvarsson has scored six goals in the cup competitions since the start of the campaign, including a hat trick against Harrogate in December.

However, the 31-year-old had been on a frustrating run in League One – summed up by the win at Carlisle last month when he saw a superb goal controversially chalked off for an offside.

“It has been a while, hasn’t it? It is really good to finally be off the mark in the league,” he beamed.

“It is a relief but I am just really happy to make an impact, and help us get over the line and get the three points.

“It was just one of those, Geth had the ball and I just kind of gambled a bit with the front post run.

“It was just instinct, the way the ball came to me and the first thing I thought was the flick. Thankfully, it went in.”

There was a familiar sight in the stadium after the ball hit the net, with the Wanderers fans bringing out the Thunder Clap.

“It was really nice, it touched my heart strings and made me feel really good,” Bodvarsson continued. “I absolutely love it, the fans were amazing as usual.”

It was an important three points for the Whites in their promotion push, with Portsmouth and Derby both picking up victories.

Bodvarsson doesn’t care how they come as long as Wanderers can keep getting points on the board heading into the business end of the campaign.

“I think we are at that stage now, you could see the game wasn’t really pretty,” he reflected. “It was more about just getting the win and getting the three points.

“We have 16 games left now so we just need to be consistent with getting those results. We had a chat after the game, we want to be better and play better.

“But I think there has been a massive improvement in my two years here in terms of winning those types of games.

“We used to sometimes slip up in these games and I feel like we are a bit more consistent with it now, even though we can’t always play the way we want to play.”
