Shrewsbury boss on Bolton draw and thinking behind tactical tweak 17976235

Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst hailed his side’s “commitment” after they dealt a blow to Wanderers’ automatic promotion hopes.

The Whites had to settle for a point after trailing twice against the Shropshire outfit, with Cameron Jerome and Paris Maghoma both getting on the scoresheet.

“We knew we were going to have long spells without the ball. They are an excellent team in possession and cause you lots of problems,” said Hurst after the final whistle.

“But I thought the way that we set up, that is one thing but then the players have to carry it out.

“Certainly first half, I thought we also carried a threat and caused them problems, caused them a bit of anxiety in the stadium.

“Although we were ahead twice, I think it would be a little bit greedy to not be pleased with a point.”

He added: “They obviously had pressure but – not to take anything away from Marko (Marosi) - I am not sure how many great saves he made.

“We cleared one off the line and stayed alive. It was night and day from the performance on Saturday and that is what we spoke about.”

The Shrewsbury boss opted to go with a back three against Ian Evatt’s side and was pleased with how the game panned out.

“We had looked at a lot of the teams who had got results against Bolton and a lot of them had played a three,” he explained.

“Doing that against two centre-forwards - and playing with two holding midfield players against their two eights, wing-backs matched up – all of a sudden, their spare man is one of the centre-backs.

“While they are comfortable on the ball, they are a long way from goal. We also felt having two up front, when we did clear a ball we had a bit more chance of putting them under pressure or getting hold of it.”
