Rumours are we're in talks with the former Fulham star, though it's known he's also attracting interest from QPR and Celtic.

Now, he is a good defender.

Good solid pro, certainly an improvement on Ream and Mills.

Though no doubt some sections of the fans won't give him a chance because ''he's not Dawson'', so automatically he is crap.

Never heard of him, therefore he is lightweight and shite. And not Dawson.

It's reported we are interested in Baird but so are QPR. Baird has been plying his trade with Fulham and is now on a free. Suspect we will have difficulty competing with Fulhams' close west London neighbours QPR on this one as in addition to wages the player will not need to move house, uproot kids from school etc.

He's a full back, I think we should be prioritising a centre back at the moment.

Just a thought, but what about moving Baptiste to CB, and playing him( if he signs) at RB.

Something I suggested on saturday night after the Forest game. Baptiste was at centre back for Blackpool so if Baird does come it would make sense to switch Baptiste for Wheater.

I'd even give Mears a shot at right back and Baptiste in the centre.

i think Baird can play centre half as well as full back, if he's on a free he's worth a punt.

That's what I would do. Baird would be a decent signing for us, he's very experienced and he's versatile too, as he can play anywhere across the back four.

We need to shift someone out first though.

Nixon about an hour ago - 'Baird won't happen. Too rich. Have to find another ... or a new way of looking at the picture.'

Can't say Im that bothered to be honest once QPR were interested he was always more likely to go there, and I'd rather we signed an out and out centre back than put a full back like Baird or Baptiste there.

Reading have handed ex-Fulham defender Chris Baird a deal until January.

The 31-year-old was released by Fulham in July, having joined in 2007 as one of a string of Northern Ireland players recruited by then-boss Lawrie Sanchez.

Also capable of playing in midfield, Baird has moved to the Royals after Jem Karacan suffered a serious knee injury in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Leeds.

Baird, who had been training with QPR, won his 61st international cap earlier this month in a 4-2 defeat to Portugal.

Reading are waiting for Football League clearance and hope to have received it before Saturday's clash with Derby County.

Unlike so many others on here (& you know who you are, don't you) I know an awful lot about Chris Baird.

He was born in Nova Scotia some time in the 1990s.
His father owned a butchers shop but had to make a hasty exit, for reasons that have never been made very clear.

It was evident from an early age that he would have a successful career in painting and decorating but never got the chance and drifted into the world of profession football instead.

Everyone who has been privileged to witness man play has come away saying "Is that it".

He would be a magnificent acquisition and I'm sure that 'The Douglas' must be very exited tonight.
