A Carl Kennedy own goal consigned Wanderers Under-18s to a 10th league defeat of the season at Lostock.

It has been a difficult FA U18 Premier League North Group season for David Lee’s side so far and they remain rock bottom after Saturday’s defeat by Newcastle with just one point from 11 matches.

But the coach has been encouraged by recent displays despite the results.

Lee said: “We played very well, so we are disappointed not to have taken anything from the game.

“We conceded an own goal after 25 minutes but totally dominated the game, creating lots of chances.

“Newcastle got lots of blocks in and enjoyed the rub of the green to deny us scoring.

“Tom Walker and Sam Bailey had good shots on target, while Guillermo Torres saw a shot blocked from inside the six-yard box in the last couple of minutes.

“The display was pleasing, though, the players’ effort and determination to keep working hard was good. If they keep up that level, their luck in front of goal has to change.”

The young Whites face a tough test on Saturday when they travel to face Manchester City. There is also the start of the FA Youth Cup campaign on the horizon with a home tie against either Sheffield United or Worcester City the first hurdle to clear.
