Wanderers are in the driving seat to sign Rotherham United defender Craig Morgan after he officially turned down a contract offer from the Millers.

The centre-half was a major force behind Rotherham’s survival effort this season and has been on Neil Lennon’s radar for a number of months.

The Whites boss picked out the Wales international as the ideal man to replace outgoing captain Matt Mills but had to wait patiently as the 28-year-old defender considered his future on a family holiday.

Morgan had previously stated he would only considering switching clubs if he felt the offer from Rotherham was not acceptable.

Ben Pringle has also rejected a contract offer from Rotherham – and the winger is another name rumoured to interest Lennon this summer.

“I was informed by Paul Douglas (Rotherham’s chief operating officer) late on Wednesday evening that at this stage we have been unable to agree terms with either of the lads or their representatives,” Rotherham boss Steve Evans told the club’s official website.

“I am obviously disappointed that both have decided to move on from what has been a simply stunning three year period for both players.

“I am not privy to the actual detail, as those negotiations are conducted by our chief operating officer.

“On behalf of everyone at Rotherham United we would like to thank both for their service and we wish them well for the future.”
