Emile Heskey has called on Bolton Wanderers to kick-start their season against Leeds United on Saturday.

The Whites endured a frustrating night in their last outing against Birmingham City, with both Gary Madine and Darren Pratley having efforts cleared off the line for Neil Lennon’s side as they fell to a first league defeat at Macron Stadium this season.

Sharing his faith in his team-mates abilities, Heskey stressed the importance of responding against Leeds.

“It’s a difficult time and very frustrating,” said the former England international. “We went out there [against Birmingham] with the intention of playing some really good football but it wasn’t to be.

“There wasn’t much between the two sides but we’ve come away with no points. It’s one of those.

“We’ve just got to re-group and rally and go again on Saturday. We have to start turning defeats into wins and draws.

“There is an anxiety when you are not winning games. You’re probably not getting the rub of the green so people will snatch at stuff, but you have to stay composed.

“We have to stay confident and I’m confident we can get out of this situation.”

Heskey continued: “We have to rally together. We’re in this together and need to rally together to pull ourselves through.

“We’ve got a confident bunch of lads, as it shows with some of our play out there, but we probably have to do it a little bit more consistently.

“We’ve got good character in the squad. We did it last year and we’re in a pretty similar situation now. Fingers crossed we can do it again.

“Leeds is a massive game for us, but every game for us now is a big game. We need to try and pick up as many points as possible.”
