Peter Reid reckons Wanderers can halt the slide next season – if they get it right at the back.

After shipping a massive 81 goals in the Championship, there is obvious room for improvement as the Whites look to rebuild in League One.

Reid worked alongside Jimmy Phillips in the last two months and has confirmed he would like to be considered for the job full-time.

Now bookies’ favourite for the post, the experienced ex-England international says his advice would be the same to anyone walking through the doors at the Macron Stadium, and taking a leaf out of his old pal Sam Allardyce’s book – it begins in the back four.

“Whoever is in charge, they’d better know this is going to be a tough job, that’s the first thing,” he told The Bolton News.

“The embargo has to go. In this league you need to go out there and sign some men.

“But it can be changed around. It comes down to basic stuff – doing the defending, seeing games out, staying solid. It has been too easy to score goals against Bolton recently and it has to stop.

“Wigan managed to turn things around and I look at Big Sam at Sunderland. What a job. I saw him concede six early on at Goodison Park against Everton but now you are looking at a team which is strong at the back which you can build from.”

Wanderers lost 24 points from winning positions last season and also conceded a Championship-high 29 goals in the last 20 minutes of games.

Co-owner Dean Holdsworth has already stated he wants the team to be the “fittest in League One” and Reid accepts there is work to be done on that front in pre-season for whoever takes charge.

“I’m not saying the players haven’t worked hard but I think they’re doing it in the wrong areas,” he said.

“Every footballer is an athlete nowadays, the pitches are great and the game has moved on.

“This lot needs a good pre-season and we need to get them out there lasting 90 minutes.

“When you look at all the numbers at the end of the game you want to see your team has run more than the opposition. I am not saying you’ll win games that way all the time but it shows you they are putting it in for you.

“Bolton fans always stick with the team. They want to see their team working their guts out. It has been a difficult time for them but they carry on turning up in numbers and the lads are lucky to have them.”

Fair point about the defense ....

I would get rid of our best CB, Wheater and then sell off our best young defensive prospect, Holding and out backup Goalie to boot.

That should improve things no end.  Razz

I am more and more convinced that Reid's going to be in the dugout as our manager next season. I don't think anyone else even wants it.

Unless you're friends with ex-managers then you don't have a clue what anyone thinks.

Not in this lifetime. And Nat, when are you going to accept the reality?

What? That if you post something enough times it will become reality?

You're a fucking negative tosser who is sucking the life out of this forum. You've made your point, now stop posting it over and over again.

You won't be happy until we're out of business.

Nat, you really are losing your edge. Are you really back to the crap about others killing the site? Seriously though you're the one who keeps banging on about other people being negative when you're the first to crawl up everyone connected to the club's back whenever we either lose a game or do something else you don't like.

I hate to break this to you but you don't have the only valid opinion on this forum and frankly you're getting boring with your 'support someone else' garbage when you scream your love of Chorley every week. Grow up please, for your own sake.

Edge? What the fuck has that got to do with anything.

I love my club. The twats who currently wear the white shirt are a bunch of overpaid ponces, but it doesn't mean I don't love BWFC.

You have no idea what's going on behind the scenes yet you talk like you're Ken Anderson's dad.

No I don't Nat and you know it. I've never claimed to be in the know, I leave that to fantasists like you. I post my honest opinion based on what I can actually see which isn't much to be frank. I would love to believe we've got some top quality, messianic superhuman coming in to manage us but I can't see it happening. Given the existence of the embargo and the way we're overloaded with overpaid ponces ( (c) Natasha Whittam 20xx) that we can't get rid of I'm not surprised that no one seems to want the job. I have mentioned a couple of people I think would be well suited to the post as it stands but you have (as always) called everyone who dares to disagree with you an idiot.

I want to find something to be positive about and make no mistake I'm grateful we still exist but beyond that I fear we're in for more dark times and struggles. I'm sure it will come as no surprise to you and many others that I am a great believer in "Hope for the best but prepare for the worst".

I hope and pray that we walk League One and crush all opposition beneath the mighty heel of the Macron but I'm not about to assume any such thing will happen as things stand. In fact if things don't change markedly for the better and soon I can see us struggling to avoid another relegation. That doesn't make me a "shit fan", just a realistic one.

But make no mistake about this, I want to be wrong. I'm dying to come on here sometime in December and see you, boggers and a few others smugly posting "We told you so bell end" because we're thirty or forty points clear of everyone else and the League are talking about presenting us the trophy on Christmas Day. I'm not afraid to eat a triple helping of humble pie and would enjoy it if that was the case.

I think the problem here is that we both love the club but you want to see us as "big" like when we were in the Prem and qualifying for Europe. I can't see us that way now and it will be a long time imo before we see those days again. Right now we're a small, struggling third tier club on the edge of annihilation and no matter how much rose you tint your glasses with it won't alter that grim reality. I wish it were different but it's not, it just isn't.
