Adam Armstrong is close to firing on all cylinders for Wanderers, says Phil Parkinson.

The Newcastle United loanee arrived at the club following a successful summer with the England Under-20s at the World Cup, which skewed his pre-season training.

He came off the bench late on in the 3-2 defeat to Leeds United on Sunday but could now play a bigger part against Millwall at the Den after scoring his first goal in the Carabao Cup.

Parkinson reckons Armstrong’s fitness levels are now closer to where he wants them to be.

“He came back in a bit later at Newcastle and maybe didn’t do the base training he needed to do – but he’s definitely getting there and I think to get off the mark will be a big lift for him and for us,” said the Wanderers boss.

“I don’t think it will take anything out of him physically, he didn’t start loads of football over there. But now we think he’s ready.

“Adam is a great finisher, he’s had a season of Championship football and he’s used to it now, he knows what to expect.”

Parkinson is planning to ease Aaron Wilbraham towards full fitness after giving him an hour in the cup game at Crewe.

“Aaron hasn’t played any minutes at all, so by rights he should have been playing in the Under-23s,” he added. “But he’ll get there.”

Millwall are missing two key men for tomorrow’s game, with striker Lee Gregory and defender Jake Cooper both picking up injuries in the midweek Carabao Cup victory over Stevenage, which was watched by Wanderers boss Phil Parkinson.
