The think tank has been working overtime this week at Lostock following Wanderers performances of very differing quality.
Plenty of questions were asked in the aftermath of last weekend’s defeat at Derby County, both of the shape of Phil Parkinson’s team and the personnel involved.
Likewise, victory over Sheffield Wednesday with a much-changed side has thrown up a more welcome set of problems for the Wanderers boss as he heads to his old employers Hull City tonight.
Seven changes were made in the Carabao Cup but such was the marked improvement in the display, each of the replacements probably has a case to keep his shirt.
“It’s a quick turnaround,” said Parkinson. “There were a few tired legs out there in the end and it’s something we’ll have to look at when we come up with a team we think can get a result at Hull.
“We’ll make the decision as a whole staff. There has been time to talk about the various options we’ve got but I can’t ask any more from the lads really because the reaction against Sheffield Wednesday was terrific.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to go into the international result on a high, to build on a very good result.”
Wanderers have carved out two decent draws on their Championship travels so far but the recently-relegated Tigers represent their toughest test to date.
Parkinson pored over the details of last weekend with assistant boss Steve Parkin and came up with a new plan to tackle Wednesday.
Now his thoughts have turned to league points and the prospect of tweaking his line-up to keep momentum going.
“I had a long chat with Steve after the Derby game, went through everything to see where we could change things around,” he said. “We knew there would be a solution, a way to win, and we were going to find it.
“In the two shapes we’d planned to work on, Sammy (Ameobi) and (Josh) Vela are very important to the system so them being out has de-railed us a little bit.
“Fil (Morais) can also play in the wide areas and he’s only just coming back, so the only real option we’ve had is to play three at the back.
“We understand people are looking at it, and maybe the dynamics of the players involved didn’t look right. We didn’t threaten enough against Derby.
“So we’re left looking at changing the shape a little bit, or the personnel within it – but we’re aware of the issue.”
