As the Champions-elect came to the Macron, we turned out more in hope than expectation.

The second-half performance at Barnsley had given us a lift and we hoped maybe Wolves might start to relax after winning promotion last week.

We’ve had some good results at home against top teams but we hadn’t won any of our last five matches.

We had to give it a go and try to nick an unlikely point, while trying to keep the score down, as goal difference could be vital at the end of the season. No pressure there then.

Phil Parkinson went for a more attacking line-up and we started brightly. Despite conceding the first goal, I felt we were still in the match, up to Benik Afobe’s well-taken goal right on half time. That goal killed us, and the second half was a case of damage limitation to prevent our goal difference becoming academic.

In the end, we were well beaten by a very good team, who deserve to be the champions of this league.

We can only wish them well for next season.

Interestingly, despite all the talk of money, they seem to have done it with one of the smaller squads in this league as only 25 players were listed in the programme.

But it is quality, not size, that matters and that is what was on display on the pitch.

Hopefully we can aspire to something like Wolves if Mr Anderson is successful at securing some real investment.

But back to more immediate pressing matters – two matches to go and points are still needed to secure our place in the Championship next season, otherwise our derby will be against Accrington Stanley.

Barnsley play their game in hand at Nottingham Forest tomorrow night, so we’ll have a clearer picture of our position when we head for Burton on Saturday. This is a must-win game. No ifs and buts, we can’t keep relying on the others to lose and if Burton win, they will go above us.

We’ve got to get some more points on the board but have hit this bad run of one point from the last six games at the worst time possible.

We have two games left to get it right to achieve our target and not see our efforts this season go to waste. The fans are up for the Burton game, the players must be as well.
