Daryl Murphy is hungry to show Wanderers that he can be the man to fire the club to League One safety.

Keith Hill’s side have stabilised since the 6-1 thrashing at Rotherham, conceding just three times in their last five outings, but have found goals of their own harder to come by.

Irish international Murphy was signed to spearhead the Whites’ attack but found himself sidelined in September with a calf injury.

Now, two games into his return, the experienced striker feels the team is playing the kind of football that can bring the best out of him.

“Quality football has been played, I’ve seen plenty of chances created and that’s what I feed off,” he said.

“I think everyone looks at me as a target man but I might surprise a few people because I’m actually quite mobile. I will run channels and do whatever the gaffer wants me to do.

“I know I am at an age now but I have never had a problem with fitness.

“I have been lucky throughout my career with injuries, I have not had serious ones, just little niggles and I just can’t wait to get started properly because I am hoping to show everyone what I am about.”

Wanderers don’t have a game for 10 days after the match at Burton was postponed because of international call-ups. The reconvene with a home game against Rochdale and significant ground to make up on the sides above them in the table.

Despite the 17-point gap to safety, Murphy remains upbeat about Bolton’s chances of avoiding the drop with more than three quarters of the campaign left to play.

“It’s a challenge,” he told the club. “We are playing games and we have got a target. You have to enjoy it and relish it.

“It’s not nice being in this position and nobody wants to be there but the only thing we can do about it is win games.

“I think if we can get a few wins, especially at home, and get the fans even more behind us then the place will be buzzing.”
