Wanderers’ wage discussions with first team players will extend into next week as the club seek further clarity on the EFL’s plans for the 2019/20 campaign.

The club is keeping tight-lipped over what cuts have been proposed to players via the PFA and whether furloughs are being considered as an option, insisting the situation is “ongoing” and that “no firm decisions have been made”.

Some Premier League clubs will meet today to discuss putting a June 30 deadline on the season to aid with player and commercial contract issues.

UEFA are also preparing their own guidance - which could extend the season until August when the Champions League final will be played.

And that could have a knock-on effect on the EFL’s provisional plans to resume competitive football on June 6.

“Until the EFL declare how they want to go forward – to play or void, our hands are tied,” a club spokesperson said. “Lockdown has no end date and there is no available testing for football in sight as the priority has rightly been given to frontline workers.

“Discussions are happening every day at every level and dates and ideas get dismissed as we pass that point and/or if they become moot. It is very complex.”

Championship side Wigan Athletic yesterday became the latest club to announce that players have deferred some of their salaries for three months to “assist the club’s long-term sustainability”.

Wanderers are also discussing in-house what to do about season ticket holders who may not be able to watch the final home games of this season.

The final Direct Debit payments were taken at the start of the month and Wanderers were already examining ways to recompense those supporters who had missed out on the Brentford game, cancelled at the end of 2018/19 for a player strike.

The club – who also face a major issue in pricing and selling next season’s tickets – are hoping to provide an update for supporters once the schedule becomes clearer.
