Eoin Doyle walked away from a comprehensive victory against Southend United and warned the rest of League Two: “We’re just getting started.”

Wanderers have been slow out of the blocks this season but after racking up five consecutive victories are now showing the first signs that they may live up to the promotion billing bestowed upon them in the summer.

Doyle, last season’s top scorer in this division, took his tally to six in the current campaign with two goals on Saturday.

And the Irish hitman feels an improving Wanderers side is now starting to realise its potential.

“The last five games show how good we can be,” he told The Bolton News. “We have got a bit of a winning mentality going, so it needs to become a habit and to continue concentrating.

“Getting that win against Salford in front of the cameras a few weeks ago was important. We have kicked on from there.

“Yes, the fixtures have been good for us but they have been tough games as well. That game could have been a banana skin even though I think Southend are in a bit of a false position, they have some good players.

“There’s definitely more to come from us. We have won the last four or five games now and there aren’t many teams in this division that are capable of doing that, no matter who they are playing against.

“It shows that what we have here is something good. It’s important we keep that momentum going now because we had such a bad start to the season that we need to be up there.

“It would be great to be up there at Christmas and people looking at us going ‘these could be the ones who push over the line,’ especially going into the window.

“The environment is great at the minute because we’re winning games, so we need to keep going.”

Both Nathan Delfouneso and Doyle are on six goals apiece for Wanderers, in what is becoming an interesting race for Wanderers’ top goal-scorer tag.

Doyle admits there is some friendly rivalry building up among the attacking players in the dressing room and reckons it could be beneficial for the club in the long term.

“As good as the goals are, the three points on the Saturday is what really makes you feel good,” he said. “It is great to be among the goals, I love being in there and a few have gone in of late. Hopefully I can keep it up.

“The lads have been great the last few games and Nathan has got a lot of goals as well. Sarce has a few, Ali was off the mark last week – everyone is chipping in and doing their bit.

“Nathan has been great – he always hangs around and his finish was top class. He’s a big asset for us.

“We are getting the points on the board now, so long may the run continue.”

The one downside to Saturday’s game was the loss of midfielder Andy Tutte to a thigh injury which looks like ruling him out of action for the next few weeks.

Doyle feels there is ample competition in the ranks.

“Losing Tutte could have been a blow but Tom White came in and did a good job, there are players champing at the bit to come into this team,” he said. “When you are winning games it’s hard to change the 11 but the ones who are not in have been trying hard and pushing us on.

“I don’t think we’re anywhere near in the league where we want to be. So we haven’t got a choice but to keep going.

“It’s a matter of turning up on a Saturday and not smelling ourselves, you could say. We have definitely got some catching up to do.”
