Crewe boss David Artell's verdict on Wanderers defeat and Bakayoko goal 13188869

Crewe boss David Artell reckons Amadou Bakayoko’s late winner should have been chalked off for an offside.

Bakayoko slotted home in stoppage time to ensure Wanderers would leave the Mornflake Stadium with all three points.

Artell called the game a “missed opportunity” as the Railwaymen bid to maintain their League One status.

The Crewe boss also says the condition of the pitch affected how often both sides were able to carve out chances in the final third.

“We shot ourselves in the foot and it was hard to take as we’d had a one-v-one at the other end before that,” said Artell.

“The game was a massive missed opportunity. It was a low-quality game on what is a poor pitch, but it’s the same for both teams.

“However, we’re asking our players to play in a way which doesn’t help them.

“There wasn’t enough quality in the final third and that pitch doesn’t help. Their lad was offside from the free-kick and it hadn’t looked like they were going to score.

“We’ll keep plugging away with them. Every game they play they learn, but it’s a real steep learning curve at the moment.”

The result leaves Crewe at the bottom of the League One table, while Wanderers remain in 11th place but have closed the gap to the top six to eight points.

Evatt’s men are back in action on Saturday, April 2 when they head to the DW Stadium to take on Wigan.
