MJ Williams gets painful injury to end season at Cheltenham 13709219

MJ Williams is likely to miss the end of the season after breaking a bone in his hands during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Cheltenham Town.

The midfielder failed to appear for the second half and was substituted for Kyle Dempsey at Whaddon Road and will now almost certainly be out for the final game of the season at home to Fleetwood Town.

Ian Evatt said after the game: “It looks like he’s broken his fifth metacarpal. I think it got caught in the lad’s shirt and as he’s moved it’s popped it out.

“He is in a bit of pain but he is a big brave lad and he will be okay.

“I think the hand is broken, though, so he will probably be out for Saturday.

“But it is all systems go now for then. There will be no flip flops, we’ll be going all out to win the game.”

Williams’ absence could open the door for former Fleetwood man Dempsey to make only his sixth start for the club since signing from Gillingham in January.

The midfielder has recently returned to training after a hamstring injury and made himself available ahead of schedule to feature in the squad at Cheltenham.

Evatt said last week: “He is one of those where we thought that his season would be over and we wanted to just take it easy with him.

“But Kyle being Kyle, he was desperate to be involved and desperate to play. He has made himself available, so he will be available for Saturday.

“He is probably not ready to start the game but will certainly impact it from the bench. Next Saturday, after a week’s training he will be able to start. It is good to have him back involved."
