'I am really happy here' - George Thomason pens new Bolton deal 16270226

Wanderers midfielder George Thomason has put pen to paper over a new contract until 2025 with an option for a further 12 months.

Thomason joined the Whites from Longridge Town back in 2019 and has gone on to make more than 50 appearances, scoring twice.

The 21-year-old became an important member of Ian Evatt’s squad during the second half of the League Two promotion campaign.

He had been a regular starter over the past couple of months but now faces a “significant” spell out of action after dislocating his knee and tearing a ligament during the 1-1 draw against Bristol Rovers.

“I am proud and privileged to sign a new contract at the club,” he said. “It is a great place for my development and I am really happy here. The manager is so ambitious and so are his coaching staff.

“Since day one, the ideas they have implemented within the squad have been great and I have just been trying to soak up all of that and stay on the journey. I have really enjoyed it.

“I have said it many times before, the journey from when I joined the club and where it is going now is – it is heading in a positive direction and I can only see that continuing that way. It is really nice to be a part of.”

Thomason says he didn’t need convincing to commit his future to the Whites and is excited for what lies ahead.

He added: “(Evatt) is really ambitious and he wants to take the club to the next level and hopefully the one above that.

“You don’t need convincing as a player when you hear those words because ultimately you want success as a footballer in terms of promotions, trophies and playing at the highest level.

“When you hear those words and you see it day-to-day on the training ground - all the little one per cent details going into the team - you don’t need convincing to sign a new contract. You just want to be a part of it.”

Despite his new deal, the midfielder will have to watch from the sidelines over the coming months as he recovers from his knee injury.

Thomason doesn’t need surgery at this stage but says he is taking “baby steps” as he aims to eventually come back stronger.

“I am doing okay now,” he said. “Initially it was rather sore but we are almost two weeks after the incident.

“I am just taking baby steps at the moment in terms of trying to get it better. I went to see a specialist and currently they have not recommended surgery, which is a positive.

“I am going to re-assess with him when we are halfway down the timescale and hopefully we are on track.”
