Dion Charles nominated for League One award for second month in a row 16431550

Wanderers striker Dion Charles has been nominated for the League One Player of the Month award for the second month in a row.

Charles was also shortlisted for the December prize but lost out to Ipswich forward Conor Chaplin despite his consistent performances.

The Northern Ireland international continued his prolific form in January, scoring four goals in six league appearances.

Charles started the month with a clinical spot kick during the emphatic 3-0 victory against promotion rivals Barnsley at Oakwell. He was also on target in the 3-0 win against Portsmouth at the UniBol two weeks later.

The 27-year-old then scored a volley during the 1-0 win against Forest Green before he was shown a bizarre red card after team-mate Elias Kachunga lashed out at a defender off the ball.

His ban was overturned and the striker made an immediate impact, scoring the winner at Charlton after some good work by Kyle Dempsey.

Charles now faces competition from Charlton midfielder Scott Fraser, Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass and Shrewsbury midfielder Luke Leahy for the prize.

Fraser was on target during the wins against Portsmouth and Lincoln, and he has played a key role in the Addicks’ recent upturn in form under Dean Holden.

Meanwhile, Windass scored a hat trick in a convincing 5-0 win against Cambridge and has helped the Owls climb to the top of the table.

Leahy managed three goals and two assists in January, as well as making some important contributions at the other end of the pitch.

The winner will be announced on Friday, February 10 and the judging panel is made up of EFL chief executive Trevor Birch, Don Goodman and Ivor Davies.

The nominees for the League One Manager of the Month award have also been revealed, with Whites boss Ian Evatt missing out despite overseeing four wins out of a possible six. The only points dropped came against Plymouth and Derby.

Morecambe’s Derek Adams, Shrewsbury’s Steve Cotterill, Sheffield Wednesday’s Darren Moore and Derby’s Paul Warne are all up for the prize.
