Back in the 60's I remember running errands for my mum to the local family bakers. We had two that I recall, Winstanly's next to the Zebra crossing at the Tramways and Cunliffe's down by Pine St.
It was Winstanly's for the oven bottom flour cakes hung on on a string and a white tin loaf with a crust that could break your teeth and Cunliffe's for the meat pies.
Now I stop at the garage and buy a loaf, wrapped in plastic that lasts 14 days and tastes n'owt like them.
