I must have walked past Lords College on Manchester Road, Bolton hundreds of times and wondered who went there. So I was quite surprised to notice yesterday that Lindsay Hoyle was educated at Lords College.

It was some years ago that I discovered that my mother went to 'Lords Commercial' for a couple of years. OK we are not talking Eton or Harrow but even so, I cannot imagine how my grandparents could possibly have afforded any school fees.

Lord Hoyle (Lindsay Hoyle's dad) is a former Chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party. Doug is now 94 and also a Wanderers fan. Interesting that he should apparently have chosen Lords College for his only son's education. It presently has about 50 pupils and I don't expect it had many more back in those days.

Lords College is now run from the former Brooklyn Hotel on Green Lane, Bolton. Anyone know much about it? Here's a starter:

It’s called something like Nikita House now?

Is this the same place?

It's a 'special needs' school I believe.

According to the last Ofsted Report there are only 26 kids on the school roll - and it is open for children from year 3 (7 year olds) to year 13 (17 year olds)

I think Lords College used to be at 53 Manchester Road before it moved and the building was turned into residential accommodation and re-named Nikita House.

Lords College used to be based on Manchester Road opposite the Orlando Street bridge. It later moved to Bridgeman Place and Chorley Old Road after that. The move to Green Lane seems to have taken place only a couple of years or so ago.

I know of nothing that would suggest it was for 'special needs' but more likely a case of serving families who were looking for a different and more personal educational environment for their children. Fees for day pupils are reported to be about £6,000 p.a.

I remember it being called Lords Commercial at one time which seemed to imply that it might have been directed in a 'commercial' direction for some years. In other words aimed at preparing children for work in commerce.

It does seem interesting, assuming Wiki to be correct, that Lindsay Hoyle's parents should have chosen a small non-mainstream pathway for the education of their only child.
