Dougie Freedman says his side’s hard work on the training ground is paying off, as Wanderers recorded their third consecutive home victory over Peterborough United on Tuesday evening.

Craig Dawson’s fifth minute header, his third goal in two games, proved decisive on a night where Wanderers turned in a resolute and assured defensive performance.

Speaking after the game Freedman said: “It was a very difficult match. Peterborough are difficult opponents and they play with a lot of freedom. They have a lot to play for and we knew it was always going to be a tough test.

“For me, the signs were there that the training ground work we do day in day out is paying off. It wasn’t our most fantastic display on the ball, but off the ball we worked very hard and made it difficult for Peterborough to create any clear-cut chances.

“We also played some fantastic football and moved the ball around really well in the opening 20 minutes and were well worthy of going a goal up.

“At the back we were solid, compact and very difficult to break down.

“We created several opportunities and obviously we wanted to go on and score more goals, but it was the defensive display that ultimately secured the three points.

“We have been performing well of late and not always getting the results. Tonight was not only a clean sheet and three points, but it was our fifth game undefeated and our third straight home win.

“All in all, we’re picking up points and moving in the right direction and that’s what it’s all about.

“It was another case of great support from the home fans. Sometimes you get games like that, where you have to dig in deep. I thought our backing was once again superb.”

The only sour note for Bolton was a first-half injury to Mark Davies, who has only recently returned from shoulder surgery.

"It has been a massive blow for us to miss Mark for the last three months. He twisted his knee and we'll see in the morning," added Freedman. "He's got a scan so let's keep our fingers crossed."

Freedman also explained the absence from his squad of Chris Eagles and Tyrone Mears.

"Eagles is not well. He phoned in on Monday, and Tyrone Mears has a blood infection so the two of them had to miss tonight," said the Scot.

When was the last time we can say our defensive display ensured us of three points? Shows we are definately moving in the right way. Good interview though from Dougie. Summed it up perfectly. He knows that we weren't good with the ball but our defensive kept them out well.

It is disappointing to lose so much initiative in a match at home, especially as we had played well until Davies got injured. Having said that we got the points and kept a clean sheet without too many anxious moments, Davies looked good playing behind the front two, lets hope its not a serious injury.

I hope Davies is OK but I fear the worst.

£ gripes from the match - Zat Knight really is an abysmal player, fucks up way too much and plays stupid passes, I remember one instance in the 2nd half were he chose to walk it in to our own box instead of going forward with it.

And that cunt of a referee, Its not only big 'fergie' who is on the right side of them.

I remember some lad shouting 'oi ref, Its the wrong fergie' ... I found it quite funny.

And finally, I sat in the WSU last night with a friend from work for a change, It was shit - our fans are boring, whinging, gits...

Sounds like another honest assessment of the game, well done Dougie.

It's bloody grim in the WSU. It's known as the Moon stand because it has no atmosphere.

It wasn't the best performance after the first 20mins or so, but we needed to grind out a result to gain a little confidence. Back to back wins, 5 unbeaten and a clean sheet. Hopefully we can build on that and push for a play off place.

I don't believe for a minute that a player can simply phone in sick.

Eagles: "I'm sick boss. Don't think I can play tomorrow night"
Dougie: "Nae bother at all pal. You're dropped anyway."
Eagles: "But who will play inside headless chicken if I'm not there?"
Dougie: "Sordell."
